Murray headlines four All-CAA Football honorees
Nov. 20, 2007
Boston, MA

Northeastern football senior captain Maurice Murray has been named CAA Football All-Conference first team after a record-breaking season for the Huskies in which he set the school record for most career rushing yards and total touchdowns, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Murray, originally from Mamaroneck, N.Y., is Northeastern’s first all-conference first team selection since offensive linemen Ryan Gibbons and Mike Roseborough were each first team honorees in 2005.

Joining Murray in all-conference honors are junior tight end Brian Mandeville and sophomore offensive tackle Kevin Newhall, who were named to the All-CAA Football second team, and senior captain Joe Mele, who was named to the All-Conference third team.

Murray, who was previously a second team All-Conference honoree in 2005 and 2006, rushed for 1,421 yards on 302 carries to lead the Husky offense. His 1,421 yards ranked second in CAA Football, second in Northeastern single-season history and seventh in the country. His 14 rushing touchdowns is tied for the most by a Husky player in a single season. He had six 100-yard rushing games this season, including a 206-yard effort in the Huskies’ 31-13 upset over then-No.8 New Hampshire. His 55 carries in that game is both a Northeastern and CAA Football record and is one shy of the Football Championship Subdivision record.

For his career, Murray rushed for 3,806 yards and scored 43 touchdowns, which both rank first in Northeastern history.

Mandeville, who hails from Walpole, Mass., earns his first all-conference selection in his first season as the starting tight end for the Huskies. Mandeville had 30 catches for a team-high 411 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead all Husky receivers. His breakout performance came on Oct. 6 at home against James Madison when he caught two touchdown passes and had 52 yards. The following week at Delaware, he caught a 76-yard touchdown pass, the season-long for the Huskies. Against Hofstra on Nov. 10, he caught two more TD passes, including the game-winning score with 17 seconds remaining in a 35-31 victory.

Newhall, a right tackle out of Malden, Mass., also earns his first all-conference selection after playing an integral role on a Husky offensive line that finished second in the nation in fewest tackles for a loss allowed. The line also only gave up 13 sacks, 16th-best in the country. The line was also responsible for a Husky rushing attack that averaged 166.5 yards a game. Newhall has started all 22 games since coming to the Huskies in 2006.

Mele, a linebacker from Sea Girt, N.J., dominated late in the season to earn his second all-conference selection. Mele, who was a third team honoree in 2005, led the Huskies in tackles with 90, including 50 solo. He was also second on the squad in sacks with 3.5. Over his final four games, Mele made 48 tackles, 29 of them solo, including a career-high 17 in the season finale at Rhode Island Nov. 17.

Mele ends his Northeastern career with 227 tackles and 8.5 sacks in 32 games.

The Northeastern football team ended the season 3-8, 2-6 in CAA Football. The Huskies defeated two nationally ranked opponents on the season and their schedule consisted of five NCAA FCS playoff teams and one FBS squad.
