Murray wins Gold Helmet Award
Nov. 7, 2007
Boston, MA

Senior captain Maurice Murray (Mamaroneck, NY) of the Northeastern University football team is the recipient of the Boston Globe Gold Helmet Award, presented by the New England College Football Writers Association at Harvard University's Dillon Field House Wednesday. The honor is presented weekly to the player with the most outstanding performance of the New England Division I schools.

The tailback picked up 206 yards on a school and conference record 55 carries with three touchdowns to lead the Huskies to a 31-13 victory over New Hampshire. Murray accounted for 73 percent of the team's 282 rushing yards on the day.

Murray was also named CAA Football's Offensive Player of the Week and one of the College Sporting News National Players of the Week for his performance.

Murray is now the school's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns (39) and rushing attempts (764). He also is second in total touchdowns (39) and rushing yards (3,477). He is 215 yards shy of first place, held by L.J. McKanas (1998-01).

For the season, his 1,092 yards is NU's third-best single-season total. His 10 touchdowns ranks sixth at Northeastern.

Murray was awarded a Gold Helmet last season when he ran for a career-high 226 yards on 34 carries with three touchdowns to lead the Huskies to a 45-31 victory over the Rhode Island Rams.

Murray and his 10 senior teammates will be honored at this Saturday's home contest against Hofstra at 12 p.m. The Senior Day ceremony will take place right before kickoff.
