Northeastern University quarterback Anthony Orio has been named a member of the 2008 National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a 3.2 GPA or better.
The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF’s current National Scholar-Athlete program, greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year and further strengthening its leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes who play football at the more than 700 college and universities with football programs.
For Orio, who is a senior on the football team, this is yet another academic accolade that the Biochemistry major has achieved. Last month, he was named to the CAA Football All-Academic team and in December, 2007, he was named to the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star team. He also was named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Academic team in 2005 and ’06.
Last season, Orio started all 11 games for the Huskies and set career highs in passing yards (1,558), passing efficiency (124.1) and rushing touchdowns (4) while also tying his career high in passing touchdowns with eight.
Orio is currently Northeastern’s all-time leader in passing accuracy with a career 56.7 completion percentage. He is also sixth in career passing yards (3,482) and eighth in career touchdown passes (19).
Orio and the Huskies return to the field on Aug. 28 when they begin their 2008 campaign with a contest at Ball State in Muncie, Ind.
