Northeastern University head football coach Rocky Hager has announced that seniors Kevin Brown, Joe Mele and Maurice Murray have been elected team captains for the upcoming 2007 season. The announcement was made during the team's preseason scrimmage and barbecue at The Winchendon School in Winchendon, Mass.

Brown, who is expected to start at strong safety this season, has 64 total tackles in 28 career games for the Huskies. Originally from Miami, Fla., Brown will team with senior free safety Barry Jeanson to form a dangerous veteran secondary.

Mele, a transfer from Illinois and originally from Sea Girt, N.J., enters his third season with the Huskies and has already racked up 137 tackles and five sacks in just 21 games. Mele, who was a 2005 All-Atlantic 10 third team selection and a 2006 Atlantic 10 All-Academic team selection, is expected to start at one of two inside linebacker spots.

Murray, who hails from Mamaroneck, N.Y., has become one of the best running backs in NU history and has an opportunity to break some of the school's all-time rushing records. A two-time second team All-Conference selection, Murray has rushed for 2,385 career yards and scored 29 touchdowns in 32 games. Last season, he rushed for 1,061 yards, which was third best in Northeastern single-season history.

The Huskies will wrap up camp in Winchendon and head back to campus on Aug. 23. Their season-opening game will be at Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. on Sat., Sept 1 at 12 p.m. The game will be carried live by the Big Ten Network.
