Maine 90, Northeastern 70
Northeastern lost for the fifth time in the last six games, as Maine had five players score in double figures and rolled past NU 90-70. It was the third straight win for the Black Bears who improved to 10-4, 5-1 in conference play. The Huskies dropped to 5-8, 2-3.
Nate Fox, Fred Meeks, and Marcus Wills each scored 18 points to lead Maine, while Andy Bedard chipped in with nine points and 13 assists. Huggy Dye scored 12 points off the bench. Freshman Jean Bain paced NU with a career-high 22 points.
Former Boston College players Fox and Bedard, both in their first seasons at Maine, made an immediate impact in their area debut. The Black Bears led the whole way, jumping out to an 18-9 lead as Fox had 10 points and Bedard five assists on his team's first six baskets. Maine increased its edge to 31-16 with 8:55 to go in the first half before Bain started to spark the Huskies
Bain had a three-pointer and a long jumper in a 15-3 NU run that pulled the Huskies within three, 34-31 with 4:39 to go before intermission. But Wills had five points in a 9-0 spurt that made it 43-31, and the Black Bears took a 45-34 edge into the break. Maine shot 60 percent (18-30) in the first half, including six of nine from Fox.
The Huskies never threatened in the second half, trimming the lead to 10 in the first minute of play, but getting no closer the rest of the way. The game's final margin of 20 points was Maine's largest lead of the night.
NU was missing two starters. Center Changa Adams sat out with a league-mandated suspension after an ejection from the previous game with New Hampshire, while Terry Kringe was out with a groin pull.
Maine held NU top scorer Marcus Blossom in check all night, limiting him to 10 points on two of 10 shooting from the field. Harold Miller picked up some of the slack, scoring 11 points, while Lin Lattimore had a season-high 14 points, to go with nine rebounds.
NU coach Rudy Keeling, who spent eight seasons at the helm of Maine, is now 3-3 versus his former team.
