Northeastern 71, Vermont 63
Sophomore guard Marcus Blossom scored 26 points to lead Northeastern to a 71-63 win over Vermont in an America East menās basketball game at Cabot Gym Sunday. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Huskies, who improved to 6-11, 3-6. Vermont (7-10, 3-6) lost for the third time in its last four games. The Huskies controlled the inside game and never trailed. Senior forward Lin Lattimore had season highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds, while junior center Changa Adams had four points, nine boards and an NU-record six blocks. Harold Miller had 16 points. Vermont, which has relied on its outside shooting all season, made just 33.8 percent of its field goal tries. Top scorer Tony Orciari had 14 points, but hit only five of 15 from the field, including two of 10 from behind the arc. Matt Chotkowski and Jared Steele both had 11 points. Blossom had a steal and a dunk that gave NU its largest lead of the afternoon at 58-46 with 5:45 left. The Catamounts then went on a 14-7 run that was capped by a pair of Chotkowski free throws that cut NUās lead to 65-60 with 58 seconds to play. Vermont got no closer, however, as the Huskies made six of eight free throws in the final minutes, including four of four from Blossom. NU jumped out to an early 10-4 edge behind three-pointers from Blossom and Miller. Tobe Carberry had all six of his points as UVM went on a 14-8 spurt to tie the game at 18 with 7:05 to go in the first half. Blossom hit consecutive jump shots to give the Huskies the lead for good. NU took a 30-25 lead into intermission. The Huskies extended the lead to 40-30 with a 10-5 run to start the second half, and the Catamounts made no serious threats the rest of the way. NUās Terry Kringe did not score but stifled Orciari, who was coming off a career-high 32-point game at Boston University Friday. Orciari made just one of seven three-pointers in the second half as the Catamounts failed to rally. Vermont has now lost six of its last seven games at NU.
