Delaware 72, Northeastern 69
Northeastern shut down the nation's second-leading scorer but still lost to Delaware, 72-69, in an America East men's basketball game at Cabot Gym Friday. Delaware's Tyrone Perry had 16 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Blue Hens who got a season-low nine points from standout forward Mike Pegues. The league's top scorer, Pegues entered the game averaging 24.2 points per game, but managed just nine against a swarming low-post defense led by the Huskies' Lin Lattimore. Pegues had scored in double figures 40 straight times. Kestutis Marciulionis added 15 points, while John Bennett and John Gordon had 12 apiece, for Delaware (15-5, 8-3). It was the Blue Hens' third straight win. Guards Marcus Blossom and Terry Kringe led NU with 15 points, and Lattimore had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. The Huskies lost for the ninth time in their last 11 games and fell to 6-12, 3-7 in league play. The game was tight throughout. NU had its largest lead of the night at 57-52 with 7:51 to play when Delaware scored six straight points, including a Perry three-pointer to take a 58-57 edge with 6:41 to go. The Huskies reclaimed the advantage with a Jean Bain layup on their next possession, but Pegues's first points of the half came on a layup with 6:10 left that put the Blue Hens ahead to stay, 60-59. After a Pegues free throw, Marciulionis hit consecutive three-pointers for a 67-61 lead with 3:33 showing. The Huskies trimmed it to two points twice and had a possession to tie trailing 70-67 and under a minute to play, but Gordon stole the ball from Blossom. Pegues then hit a layup for a 72-67 lead with 13 seconds remaining. Delaware jumped out to leads of 8-2 and 15-8, their largest of the game, before NU got going. The Huskies used a 9-2 spurt to tie it at 17 and then kept it close before taking their first lead of the night, 32-31, on two Bain free throws. A Bain steal and layup gave the Huskies a 34-33 lead at halftime. Lattimore got double-team help all game and held Pegues to just four points before intermission.
