Northeastern 71, Towson 70
Harold Miller made a 12-foot jumper with six seconds left to lift Northeastern to a 71-70 win over Towson in an America East men's basketball game at Cabot Gym Sunday. Brian Barber had a chance to win the game for Towson at the buzzer but his 17-footer from the right side missed short. Miller's game-winning shot came after Marlin Wise missed two free throws for Towson with 18 seconds left. NU, down by as much as 14 in the second half, had not led since the 15:13 mark of the first half. The Huskies improved to 7-12, 4-7 in league play, while the Tigers dropped their third straight and are now 5-15, 4-8. Marcus Blossom led the Huskies with 21 points, including six of the team's final 10. Miller added 17 points with backcourt mates Terry Kringe and Jean Bain netting 10 apiece. Pete Mauro topped a group of four Tigers in double figures with 21 points. Towson led 68-63 with 3:06 left, but Blossom made back-to-back shots to pull NU within one at 68-67 and 1:56 showing. Barber (15 points) gave Towson a three-point cushion, 70-67, with a short jumper at the 53-second mark. Kringe then answered with a basket at the other end, cutting the Tigers' edge to 70-69 and 27 seconds showing. Wise missed the pair of free throws on Towson's ensuing possession. Both teams were very sloppy. The Huskies had 20 turnovers, six coming in a five-minute stretch early in the second half when Towson turned a 38-38 game into a 47-38 advantage. The Tigers increased the lead to 14, their largest of the day, as Alphonso Hawes (14 points) made a layup to cap a 21-7 run that made it 59-45 with 9:10 to play. The Tigers then fell apart, committing seven turnovers in the next five and a half minutes as NU rallied to tie the game at 63 with an 18-4 spurt. Towson led for nearly all of the first half and had a lead as big as seven, 29-22, with 4:17 left. The Huskies cut it to one at intermission with a 12-6 surge, capped by a Bain three-pointer with 13 seconds left in the half. Towson coach Mike Jaskulski, who was an assistant to NU coach Rudy Keeling when he was at Maine, is now 2-2 against his former boss.
