Drexel 77, Northeastern 68

Sophomore Mike Kouser scored 24 points and had 13 rebounds to lead Drexel to a 77-68 win over Northeastern in an America East men's basketball game at Cabot Gym Saturday. League-leading Drexel shot 71.4 percent from the floor in the second half (15-21), turning a tie game at the half into a comfortable win. The Dragons, who shot 63.0 percent for the game, improved to 17-6, 14-2 in conference play, while NU fell to 9-14, 6-9. Drexel's sixth straight win ended NU's season-long two-game win streak. Kouser's layup started a 7-0 run to open the second half that gave Drexel the lead for good and made it 40-33 with 17:52 left. A pair of free throws from Marcus Blossom (NU-high 26 points) got the Huskies within five, but the Dragons went on a 19-8 spurt for their largest lead of the day, 59-43, with 9:46 left. In all, Drexel made nine of 11 field goal tries and outscored NU 26-10 in the first 10:14 of the second half. Cortez Bond's three-pointer with 1:31 left capped a 21-11 Husky surge over the next eight minutes that trimmed the Drexel edge to six at 70-64. Bond had nine of his 11 points during the spurt. NU got no closer the rest of the way as Drexel made seven of 10 free throws to secure the win. Joe Linderman finished with 21 points for Drexel, while Mike DeRocckis added 18, 12 coming in the first half. The Dragons did a nice job on NU's second-leading scorer Harold Miller, who ended with a season-low six points, seven below his average. The game was tight in the first half. DeRocckis made consecutive three-pointers to give Drexel a five-point lead, the largest by either team before intermission, at 18-13 with 11:10 left. Blossom hit a three-pointer and a layup to tie the game at 18 with 8:21 showing. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way. Linderman's layup at the buzzer made it 33 all at the break, the 10th tie of the half. Drexel coach Bill Herrion is now 15-3 for his career against Northeastern.
