Norman Richardson scored a game-high 25 points to lead four players in double figures as Hofstra eased to a 78-52 win over Northeastern in an America East men's basketball game at Cabot Gym Monday. Hofstra won for the seventh time in its last eight games and improved to 20-8, 13-4. The Huskies lost their second straight and fell to 9-15, 6-10. The 26-point margin matched NU's biggest home loss in its league history and its worst home defeat overall since a 31-point beating by Duke on Dec. 30, 1995. Craig Claxton added 16 points (7-10 FG) and five assists for Hofstra, while Jason Hernandez had 12 points and Roberto Gittens 11. Senior Harold Miller paced NU with 20 points, including the 1000th of his career in his final home game. None of Miller's teammates scored in double figures as the Huskies shot a season-low 31.0 percent from the field, a miserable 29.0 percent (9-31) in the second half. It looked as though Hofstra would dominate from the outset as the Flying Dutchmen jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 15-4 with 14:09 left in the first half. Richardson had nine of Hofstra's first 15 points, including two three-pointers. But NU stormed back with a 17-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 21-15 edge with 10:06 to go before intermission. The Huskies didn't do much the rest of the night, however. Hofstra got six points from Roberto Gittens in a 19-4 spurt to close the half and took a 34-25 edge into the break. Changa Adams hit a jumper to pull NU within seven at 34-27 with 18:12 to go, but Hofstra began to pull away from there. A dunk by Gittens and a three-pointer by Richardson made it a 12-point bulge, 39-27 with 17:05 to go. The Huskies got no closer than nine the rest of the way. Getting layups from Claxton (10 second-half points) and forcing nine NU turnovers on the defensive end, Hofstra's lead ballooned as large as 29, 70-41, with 4:00 showing. Hofstra reached 20 wins for just the second time since moving to Division I in 1972. It is their most wins since the 1976-77 team went 23-7.
