Despite Marcus Barnes’ career-high 36 points, Northeastern’s season came to an unexpected end Saturday night at Walter Brown Arena, losing to sixth-seeded Hartford, 79-74, in the America East Championship quarterfinals.

The third-seeded Huskies end the year 19-11 overall, while the Hawks improve to 12-16. They will play No. 2 Vermont in the semifinals Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The other semifinal tips off at noon and pits No. 8 Stony Brook, which upset top-seeded Boston University, and No. 4 Maine.

With 6:02 left in the game, Trevor Goode made two free throws, giving Hartford a 73-60 lead, but, behind Barnes’ inspired play, the Huskies went on a 12-1 run over the next 3:47 to slice it to 74-72. Barnes scored seven of the Huskies’ points in that span, five coming from the charity stripe.

Each team lost one of its key players during that stretch, as Aaron Cook, who scored 18 points, fouled out of the game with 3:39 left, and Jose Juan Barea was whistled for his fifth foul at 2:57. Barea’s streak of double-digit scoring games was snapped as he scored a season-low nine points.

Two Bo Taylor foul shots put UHA up 76-72 with 1:52 left, but Sylbrin Robinson’s made a layup with 42 seconds on the clock to draw NU within two, 76-74. The game’s most controversial play occurred with 23 seconds remaining. Javorie Wilson reached in on Charles Ford, and as Ford was falling to floor, Wilson grabbed him in an apparent attempt to prevent him from hitting the floor too hard. The refs, however, didn’t see it that way, and Wilson was called for an intentional foul, giving Hartford two shots and possession. Ford made one of the two ensuing free throws.

On the Hawks’ ensuing possession, Ryan Stys was fouled, and he hit both foul shots to put UHA up 79-74.

Barnes’ 36 points tie him with Colgate’s Mike Ferrara for the fifth most in an America East Championship game. Robinson was the only other Husky in double figures, finishing with 11 points, to go along with nine rebounds.

Ford scored 15 for the Hawks, while Stys chipped in with 15 and Taylor 10.

Northeastern was just 6-of-30 (20 percent) from three-point range, including 0-for-9 in the second half. Hartford turned the ball over 23 times to NU’s 13, but the Hawks held a 43-27 advantage in the rebounding department.

With Hartford leading 3-1, Barnes drilled a three-pointer to ignite a 16-2 run, culminating in a Wilson three, that put the Huskies ahead 17-5 with 14:51 left in the first half. Barnes scored six points in the stretch, while Cornellius Wright had four.

Northeastern grabbed a 25-11 advantage on a Barea leaner, but Hartford reeled off 25 of the next 29 points to go up 36-29, taking the lead on a Stys three-pointer with 6:50 on the clock. NU went more than four minutes without a field goal. Its only points in that time were a pair of Barnes free throws and a Robinson layup.

Barnes’ three with 3:55 left cut it to four, 36-32, but the Hawks scored eight straight points to take their largest lead of the half, 44-32. Barnes followed with another three – his fourth of the half – to cut it to 44-35, but Ford made a reverse layup with a minute remaining, and Hartford went into the locker room leading 46-35.

Hartford scored the first three points of the second half on two technical free throws and a Cook foul shot to open up a 49-35 lead.

Goode’s three-point play at 14:30 of the second gave the Hawks their largest lead of the game, 56-41, but NU fought back with a 12-3 run over the next 3:15. Barnes and Wilson had four points apiece, and Robinson capped it with two free throws, making it 59-53.

Two Barnes foul shots with 9:17 left made it a six-point game once again, but a Ford runner, a Stys jumper and two Ford free throws pushed Hartford’s bulge to 12, 69-57.
