The story of the night was Curtis Sumpter, who had a season-high 19 points at the half and finished with a career-high 38. He scored 13 of Villanova’s first 15 points, the last nine coming on a trio of 3-pointers. His third bomb started a 14-0 ‘Nova run, which gave it a 24-7 advantage with 7:47 remaining in the half.
For the second game in a row, Northeastern suffered through an extended scoring drought. The Huskies went without a point for a stretch of almost eight minutes, from Cornellius Wright’s three-point play with 14:06 left in the first half until Bobby Kelly’s jumper with 6:10 showing on the clock.
NU went on a mini-run at the end of the half, as Adam Drain sunk two threes and Jesse Dunn and Sylbrin Robinson each hit one to make it a 34-21 game at intermission.
The Huskies didn't help themselves at the free-throw line, from where they shot 39 percent (9-of-23). They were led by Marcus Barnes' 16, but that came on 4-of-20 shooting.
The Huskies return home to play Marist in a 4:30 p.m. game on Sunday, Dec. 14 at Matthews Arena.
