The Northeastern University men’s basketball team shot 52 percent in the second half, had a 24-0 run and held the Drexel offense to 11 total field goals in a 63-40 rout of the Dragons Saturday evening at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia.
The win is the Huskies’ first at the DAC since 1998, ending a string of six straight losses there. It’s also the first time that Northeastern has beaten the Dragons twice in a season in 30 years.
Sophomore captain Matt Janning and junior Eugene Spates each scored 19 points for the Huskies, who were held to 22 percent shooting in the first half before exploding in the second half. Spates added a career-high eight rebounds and three steals.
The Huskies held the Dragons to 23 percent from the floor, a season-low for NU opponents as the defense was stifling on a team that was already without its star player Frank Elegar, who missed the game with an injury. Drexel also committed 21 turnovers in the game, 13 in the second half, helping NU get the lead for good.
The Northeastern defense set opponent season lows in points, field goal percentage and field goals made. The 40 points is the fewest NU has allowed in a game since a 57-39 win over New Hampshire on Feb. 5, 1991.
Both teams struggled mightily in the first half. The Huskies, who trailed for all but 1:40 of the first half, shot only 22.7 percent and committed nine turnovers. The Dragons led for a while, but ended up shooting only 19 percent to open the game and made eight turnovers. The Dragons had a 10-5 lead with 7:56 to play when Northeastern turned it around. Junior Eugene Spates had a hand in give the Huskies the 12-11 lead at halftime. He knocked down two threes, including one at 2:54 that brought NU’s deficit to 12-11. Spates then was fouled on his way to the basket with 20 seconds left and he hit both free throws to give NU the 16-15 lead.
The first half proved to be an aberration as the Huskies came out firing after halftime, connecting on nine of their first 15 shots while the Dragons went dead cold. Gerald Colds was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit all three free throws to make it 18-16 Drexel, but Allen tied the game up with free throws. Scott Rodgers nailed a three to put Drexel up again and he would hit a fadeaway jumper a short time later giving the Dragons a 23-20 lead at 17:53.
At that point the Huskies took over the contest with a 24-0 run that extended almost 10 minutes. Janning started the run with a three-pointer to tie the game at 23-23. Allen then pulled a spin-move on his man on his way to the basket and hit an easy layup to give NU the lead. Janning then pulled up another three to quickly give the Huskies their largest lead of the game, 28-23. The Huskies continued the run with easy baskets as Drexel continued to turn the ball over frequently. The run ended with Janning going coast to coast with a layup to make it 40-23, Spates hitting a pull-up jumper for a 42-23 lead and then Allen stealing the ball from Rodgers and hitting a fastbreak layup to extend the advantage to 44-23.
That sealed the game in Northeastern’s favor as the Dragons were unable to muster points or hold onto the ball keep up.
Northeastern now returns home for a week with games against Old Dominion on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and William & Mary Saturday at 1 p.m. Both games are at Matthews Arena.
