Barea is regarded by many Northeastern followers as the most exciting player ever to wear a Husky uniform. A first-class point guard, he proved himself as a national leader in both scoring and assists, finishing the 2004-05 season as the first player since 1997-98 to rank in the Top 10 in both categories and finishing among the top 20 in his senior season. He can shoot from anywhere on the floor, penetrate and always find the open man. He has garnered numerous awards from the conference and national levels, as well as the international level of play as a standout for the Puerto Rican National Team. In his senior season, he received his highest honors, being named an AP All-America honorable mention, as well as the CAA Player of the Year and CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Player of the Year. Barea was also a two-time finalist for the Bob Cousy Award presented to the nation's top point guard.

2003-04: Named First Team America East All-Conference, becoming the first Husky in 14 years to receive that honor...recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) as a member of its Division I All-District 1 Second Team...tabbed a CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-American...topped the league in three-point percentage (.358)...led the team and was second in the conference in scoring (20.7) and assists (5.76)... became the first Husky since Reggie Lewis in 1986-87 to average at least 20 points a game...ranked first in America East in scoring (23.2), assists (5.44), field goal percentage (.411) and three-pointers made (3.33) in conference games...dished out sixth-most assists (150) and attempted sixth-most field goals (467) in NU history...was Huskies’ leading scorer in 10 straight games, from Jan. 11 to Feb. 11, the longest such streak since Lewis led NU in scoring in 12 consecutive contests from Jan. 8, 1987 to Feb. 14, 1987...became the 25th Husky to score 1,000 career points Feb. 29 versus Albany, reaching that mark in his 53rd game, becoming the third-fastest Husky to do it, behind only Reggie Lewis (51 games) and Pete Harris (52)...received America East Co-Player of the Week honors Jan. 4, averaging 20.3 ppg, 5.3 apg, 4.0 rpg and 3.7 spg in leading the Huskies to wins over Curry (Dec. 29), Stony Brook (Jan. 2) and New Hampshire (Jan. 4)...scored a game-high 20 points and was 9-for-9 from the line, including 8-for-8 in the final 3:55, in NU’s 77-70 win over Albany (Jan. 11)...named America East Co-Player of the Week (Jan. 19) following his performances versus Hartford and UMBC...scored 32 points, tying a career high with seven three-pointers, to lead Northeastern to a 99-89 victory over Maine (Feb. 26)…named America East Player of the Week for the third time March 1 for his efforts versus the Black Bears and Great Danes...represented Puerto Rico in three international tournaments...at the Under-21 Tournament of the Americas in Halifax, Nova Scotia, helped his team advance to the gold medal game by averaging 24.8 points, 7.2 assists and 6.8 rebounds per game...at the Under-21 Centrobasket tournament in Caguas, Puerto Rico, earned MVP honors in helping Puerto Rico win the gold medal, leading all tournament players in scoring (18.0), assists (7.5) and steals (3.5)...at the 2004 Coca-Cola Global Games, paced all players in scoring (28.5 ppg) and helped vault Puerto Rico into the bronze medal contest, in which he scored a tournament-high 35 points.

2002-03:Started all 28 games in which he appeared...led the team and was third in America East in scoring (17.0 ppg)...was named to the America East All-Rookie, All-Tournament and third-team All-Conference squads...joined teammate Aaron Davis as the only freshmen to lead NU in scoring; Davis became the first in 2001-02...first Husky freshman to record 400 points and 100 assists in a season...led NU with a team-high 25 double-figure scoring games...only player in the conference to be ranked in the top 10 in scoring (third/17.0), assists (third/3.89) and steals (seventh/1.57); also listed fourth in free throw percentage (78.5), fifth in field goal percentage (40.7), seventh in assist-turnover ratio (1.38) and eighth in three-pointers made (1.71)...had team-high 24 points, including a basket with 10 seconds left to give the Huskies the lead, at New Mexico (Dec. 2)...had a decisive driving lay-up with 11 seconds left to give NU a 72-67 lead in upset win at Boston College (Jan. 5)...made a three-pointer with eight-tenths of a second remaining to break a 68-68 tie and complete an NU playoff-record 38-point performance in the 71-68 win over Maine in the America East quarterfinals (March 9).

High School: Played one year each of basketball and volleyball at Miami Christian High...helped lead the Victors to a 38-2 mark, setting a Florida state record for wins, and the 1A Florida state championship in 2002...averaged 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals, while being named Team MVP, All-Dade County and All-State as a senior.

Personal: Born June 26, 1984...enjoys going to the beach and watching television...major is Sociology...Class of 2007...captained the championship-winning Puerto Rican team at the 2002 FIBA Pan American Junior Basketball Championship in Venezuela.
