Sophomore guard Jose Juan Barea was named America East co-Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 4, the conference office announced today.

It is the first time in his career he has received this honor and the sixth time he has garnered a weekly conference accolade as he was named rookie of the week five times last season.

Barea averaged 20.3 points per game, 5.3 apg, 4.0 rpg and 3.7 spg in a 3-0 week for Northeastern, one which included wins in its first two conference games, over Stony Brook and New Hampshire.

Against the Seawolves, Barea scored 18 points, dished out eight assists, hauled in five rebounds and recorded a career-high-tying five swipes in an 82-63 victory. He followed that up with a season-high 31 points to go along with five boards, three assists and three thefts in a 75-72 triumph over the Wildcats. He also set a career high in that game with six three-pointers.

For the week, Barea shot 46 percent (24-for-52) from the field, and his assist-to-turnover ratio was 2-to-1 (16-to-8).

Barea is averaging 17.8 ppg and 6.3 apg for the 8-5 Huskies, who travel to Vermont Wed., Jan. 7.
