Sophomore point guard Jose Juan Barea was named America East Co-Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks, the conference office announced today.
The Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, native averaged 26.0 ppg and 6.0 apg in leading Northeastern (11-6, 5-1) to a 2-0 week, one which included a pair of conference wins over Hartford and UMBC.
Against the Hawks, Barea scored 23 points and dished out five assists in a 76-59 victory. He netted 11 points in a decisive 17-4 first-half run, after which the Huskies’ lead never dipped into single digits.
Barea followed that up with a 29-point, seven-assist, five-rebound effort in an 81-62 victory over the Retrievers. He made five of eight three-point attempts, including three on consecutive possessions in the game’s final three minutes to ice the win.
For the week, Barea shot 45 percent (17-for-38) from the field, and his assist-to-turnover ratio was 2.40 (12-to-5).
This is the seventh weekly honor Barea has garnered in his career as he was named conference rookie of the week five times last season.
Barea and the rest of his teammates will go for their fourth win in a row when they host Binghamton on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
