Barea, James earn weekly conference honors Feb. 28, 2005 Boston, Mass.Junior guard Jose Juan Barea and freshman forward Shawn James were named America East co-player and co-rookie of the week, respectively, the conference office announced Monday, Feb. 28.
It is the fourth time this season and seventh time in his career Barea has received the honor. James earns at least a share of the honor for the third straight week and sixth time overall. That ties him with Rah-Shun Roberts (1994-95) for the second-most rookie of the week awards by a Northeastern player.
Barea averaged 25.0 points and 8.5 assists for the Huskies, who picked up home wins over New Hampshire and Albany last week. He scored 26 points and handed out seven assists in an 88-65 win over the Wildcats and followed that up with 24 points and 10 assists in a 70-63 defeat of the Great Danes. Barea shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) for the week.
James had a game for the ages Sunday against Albany, recording the second triple-double in school history (he posted the first one Dec. 30 against Iona) with 15 points, a career-high 17 rebounds and 11 blocks. The latter figure ties his school record. He is second in the country in blocked shots with 5.57 a game.
Barea, James and the rest of their teammates have earned the No. 2 seed in the America East Championship. They will take on the winner of the Hartford-Stony Brook first-round game Saturday, March 5 at 6 p.m. at the Events Center in Binghamton, N.Y.
