The men's crew varsity boat rallied back from a disappointing effort against Harvard to upend Pennsylvania in the 35th annual Burk Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Penn on Mother's Day.
The varsity cruised to the finish line at a time of 5:54.9 while Penn finished at 6:08.9.
The win for NU closes the gap on the all-time series. The Quakers have won 19 of the 35 meetings, but the Huskies have now taken the last three races.
NU gradually made the race an afterthought. At 500 meters, they had a half-length lead before pushing forward to a length and a half at the 1000 meter mark and putting an end to Penn's chances with a three-length lead at 1500 meters.
Penn did take some solace in winning the second varsity and freshman races. The Quakers rowed a 6:12.9 in the 2V to NU's 6:15.2 and they rowed a 6:11.3 in the freshman to NU's 6:13.8.
The win gives NU its second straight 4-1 regular season regatta record. The Huskies will row next Sunday, May 16, in the Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The parings for the heats will be announced later this week.
