John Pojednic enters his ninth season as head coach of Northeastern’s men’s crew. His career record for regular season regattas is 26 victories to only 14 losses. His crews have made the finals of the Eastern Sprints for six of the last eight rowings of that prestigious regatta and have medaled twice. At the IRA National Championship Regatta, the Huskies have reached the finals four times in the past eight years, and came in fourth last year. In his eight seasons, Pojednic has enjoyed six winning campaigns.
Pojednic is a 1997 honors graduate of Boston College, where he rowed for four years as a member of the lightweight eight. When he started his rowing saga at BC, the crew program was only five years old. In his junior year, the championships started to roll in. First came the New England crown and then the coveted small college national title. In his senior season, the Eagles repeated as the New England and national small college champions.
Pojednic’s fascination with crew led him to join the BC coaching staff upon graduation. His chief duty was the lightweights and again they won the New England and the national titles.
The next year, he was promoted to Director of Men’s Rowing and varsity coach at Boston College. The success continued as his lightweight eight won both championships. In the summer of 1998, Pojednic became the coach of elite level rowing at the U.S. National Team Lightweight Men’s Development Program. Victories continued to be commonplace for Pojednic as his eight won at the Canadian Henley, U.S. Elite, and American National Championships.
It is hard to keep success a secret on the Charles River and by the fall of 1999, former coach Buzz Congram had added Pojednic to his Northeastern rowing staff. One year later he was elevated to head coach. Pojednic resides in Charlestown, Mass.
