Northeastern held its annual awards banquet on Saturday at Matthews Arena. Junior captain Joe Vitale took home team MVP honors while freshman forward Wade MacLeod was named the team’s Rookie of the Year. Ryan Ginand earned the Huskies Radio Award as the most exciting player during Northeastern broadcasts, Jim Driscoll was named Unsung Hero and David Strathman was named Most Improved Player. Northeastern alum John Cullinane was the featured speaker at the banquet.

Vitale named N.E. All-Star, Most Improved
Junior Joe Vitale was named All-New England and received the Paul Hines Award as New England's Most Improved Player, the New England Hockey Writers Association announced on April 1. Vitale led Northeastern in scoring with 12 goals and 23 assists for 35 points in 37 games. He more than doubled his previous career best of 16 points, which he accomplished as both a freshman and sophomore. He was also named to the Hockey East All-Star second team.

Mews elected to NU Hall of Fame
Harry Mews, Class of 1991, was elected to the Northeastern Hall of Fame in 2008. He could not attend the formal ceremonies due to a family obligation, so he will be inducted with the 2009 Hall of Famers. Mews finished his career at NU with 64 goals and 101 assists for 165 points and helped the Huskies to the Hockey East title in 1988.

Vitale named second team All-Hockey East
Junior Joe Vitale was named to the Hockey East All-Star second team on March 21. Vitale, the team captain, led Northeastern in scoring with 12 goals and 23 assists for 35 points in 37 games. In 27 Hockey East games, Vitale put up an 11-22-33 scoring line, good for third in the league. He was named Hockey East Player of the Week three times as the Huskies went 16-18-3 (12-13-2 Hockey East), a three-win improvement.

Huskies lose deciding game to Vermont
Northeastern lost to Vermont 4-1 in the deciding game of the best-of-three Hockey East Quarterfinal series on March 16 at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Senior Jimmy Russo scored the lone goal for the Huskies on an assist from freshman Tyler McNeely. Brad Thiessen made 27 saves in net. Northeastern ends the season 16-18-3 (12-13-2 Hockey East). The 16 wins are the most the Huskies have had in a season since the 2001-02 campaign.
