|
BOSTON, MA - Mike Ryan scored three goals to lead Northeastern to a 4-3 win over St. Lawrence at Matthews Arena on Friday. It was the season opener for both teams.
Ryan, a sophomore, scored all three of his goals in the final period, including the game-winner at 16:37 off assists from freshman Scott Selig and sophomore Brian Sullivan.
The score was tied at one after two, but SLU scored on the power-play only 44 seconds into the period for a 2-1 lead on a goal by Alan Fyfe. But Ryan answered at 1:53 on assists from Mike Jozefowicz and Graig Mischler. The Saints regained the lead on another power-play score, by Jim Lorentz from Ray DiLauro at 11:48. Ryan then netted a wacky goal just 22 seconds later. His shot from the blueline was deflected over the shoulder of St. Lawrence goalie Jeremy Symington.
Ryan then completed his first career hat trick for the game-winner with just 3:23 to go.
NU kept the play in the St. Lawrence end for most of the night, outshooting the Saints 44-13. Symington finished with 40 saves, while the Huskies' Mike Gilhooly had 10.
St. Lawrence opened the scoring in the first period. With NU on the powerplay, SLU junior Jack O'Brien stole the puck from John Peterman, raced in and blasted a slap shot past Gilhooly at 9:34.
Northeastern tied the game at 13:54 of the second when Selig scored his first collegiate goal, stuffing in a rebound of a Mischler shot.
The Huskies had several excellent opportunites in the first period, but failed to take advantage. Less than 30 seconds into the game, SLU's Mike Muir received a game-misconduct for hitting from behind. NU only managed two shots on the five-minute major. Late in the first period, both Ryan and Trevor Reschny had breakaways, but Symington made the stops.
