| 2000-01 Schedule/Results Providence 4, Northeastern 2
Marc Suderman scored two goals in the final 14 seconds to break a 2-2 tie and lead Providence to a 4-2 win over Northeastern in a Hockey East matchup Saturday night at Matthews Arena. The game-winning goal came with just 14 seconds remaining in regulation when Suderman scored from Jon DiSalvatore and J.J. Picinic. The Friars put even more of a damper on the NU bench when Suderman scored again 10 seconds later, capping the game’s scoring. Suderman’s two goals and one assist increased his point total to eight on the season. Providence improved to 7-2-1, 4-1-1 in Hockey East play, while NU dropped to 5-4-1, 2-3-1. The Huskies have now lost two in a row for the first time all season. It was also NU’s first home loss as they fell to 3-1-1 at Matthews Arena. NU tied the game at two with 14:02 remaining in the final period, when Chris Lynch scored from Scott Selig and Jim Fahey. The goal ended NU’s 0-for-20 power-play drought. The Friars were first to get on the board, as Picinic recorded two goals in the opening 20 minutes of play (one power-play, one even-strength). The goals marked Picinic’s 10th and 11th of the season. Down 2-0, NU came out after the first intermission and got a quick goal from Joe Mastronardi in the first four minutes, when PC goaltender Boyd Ballard was caught out of the crease. The goal was Mastronardi’s second in as many games. The second period ended with NU still down, 2-1. That didn’t last long though. After killing a penalty in the opening two minutes of the third, the Huskies found themselves on a power-play of their own and took advantage of the opportunity. Lynch’s goal was his seventh of the 2000-01 campaign. Bpyd Ballard stopped 39 of 41 NU attempts. Jason Braun also played well, as he had 30 saves for the Huskies, 19 coming in the third period. The win gives Providence a weekend sweep of the Huskies. The Friars downed NU 3-1 on Friday. Last night PC defeated NU 3-1 at Schneider Arena in Providence. Peter Fregoe had two goals to lead the Friars. NU has now lost five straight to Providence. The Huskies are 2-1-1 on Saturdays this season and 3-1-1 at home. Every NU home game this season has come against a ranked opponent, including Saturday's versus 13th ranked Providence.
