| 2000-01 Schedule/Results Maine 5, Northeastern 1
ORONO, ME - Maine junior forward Niko Dimitrakos had two goals and two assists to lead the Black Bears to a 5-1 victory over Northeastern Friday night at Alfond Arena. The loss was the fourth straight for Northeastern, which drops to 5-6-1, 2-4-1 in Hockey East. Maine improves to 6-4-3, 3-1-1 in Hockey East. It was Maine's first victory over Northeastern since a 5-1 win Feb. 5, 1999. Maine raced out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. The Black Bears Dan Kerluke scored through the five-hole of NU goalie Jason Braun at 3:19. The second Maine goal was scored by Lucas Lawson unassisted at 16:51. Lawson picked up the puck at the blue line and raced in on the NU net. Braun made the initial save with his stick, but the rebound came right back to Lawson who stuffed the puck in the net. The Black Bears added a third goal in the second period. On the power-play, Tom Reimann intercepted an attempted clearing pass by NU and put a shot toward the net. Niko Dimitrakos was in place at the side of the goal for the deflection through Braun's legs. The Huskies trimmed the gap to 3-1 at 2:20 of the third as Willie Levesque took a pass from Jim Fahey and beat Maine goalie Matt Yeats over his left shoulder at 2:20. It was Levesque's fourth goal of the season and Fahey's team leading 10th assist. But Maine sealed the win with a pair of goals in a span of a little over two minutes. The first was scored by Dimitrakos at 4:51 and the second by Robert Liscack assisted by Dimitrakos at 6:55. Yeats had 22 saves for Maine and Braun 24 for the Huskies. The same two teams will faceoff on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Portland Civic Center.
Both teams entered the game in the midst of scoring droughts. NU had scored two goals or less in four of its last five games, and Maine had scored two goals or less in three of its last four. Husky starting goalie Braun has made at least 30 saves in his last three starts. The Huskies and Bears battled to a 1-1 tie earlier this season at Matthews Arena. NU head coach Bruce Crowder spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Maine under current Black Bear head coach Shawn Walsh. The Black Bears advanced to the NCAA Tournament during each of the seasons Crowder was an assistant coach.
