| 2000-01 Schedule/Results Northeastern 3, Maine 3
PORTLAND, ME - Trailing 3-1 with less than three minutes to play, Northeastern freshman Trevor Reschny scored twice in a span of 55 seconds to tie the game in an eventual 3-3 tie against the University of Maine at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine. At 17:52 of the third, Reschny redirected a Mike Jozefowicz shot past Maine goalie Mike Morrison to make the score 3-2. Then on the power-play, head coach Bruce Crowder decided to pull the goalie to create a 6x4 advantage. The gamble paid off when Reschny scored the game-tying goal at 18:47 on assists by Jozefowicz and Chris Lynch. With the tie, NU snaps a four-game losing streak. The Huskies now stand at 5-6-2 and 2-4-2 in Hockey East The Black Bears are 6-4-4 and 3-1-2. Maine defeated NU 5-1 on Friday night in Orono. After seeing Northeastern tie the game in the opening minute of the third period, the Black Bears reclaimed the lead at 9:08 when Matthias Trattnig stole the puck from Matt Keating along the right board, skated across ice and fired a shot through NU goalie Mike Gilhooly's legs. Trattnig added another goal only 17 seconds later, sending home a rebound of a Tom Reimann shot. Morrison made 27 saves for Maine, and Gilhooly 23 for Northeastern. The same two goalies were in net Nov. 4 when NU and Maine battled to a 1-1- tie. Gilhooly is now 1-0-3 in his career against Maine. After being outshot 12-5 in the first period, the Huskies came back to outshoot Maine 25-14 over the final two periods and overtime. NU spent nine of the game's first 10 minutes short-handed. John Peterman was whistled at 55 seconds for boarding. Only 14 seconds after killing Maine's power-play, Brian Sullivan received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for hitting from behind at 3:09 of the first period. Martin Kariya made NU pay when he received a crossing pass from Francis Nault and sent the puck into the net from the right post at 4:36. With 29 seconds left on the five-minute major, Peterman was whistled for obstruction interference to give the Black Bears a 5x3 for half a minute. Just as the 5x3 was winding down Niko Dimitrakos had a blast from just inside the blue line that beat Gilhooly but deflected off the post. The Huskies got a chance of their own on the power-play at 9:43 of the first, when Gray Shaneberger was called for obstruction-interference. At the time of the penalty on the Maine forward, the Black Bears were outshooting NU 6-0. The Huskies had four shots with the man-advantage but failed to cash in on any of the opportunities. The Huskies had a great scoring chance, while short-handed. With just under 10 minutes to play in the second, Leon Hayward and Sean MacDonald broke in on the Maine net 2-on-1. Hayward held the puck just long enough before sliding it across to MacDonald. But MacDonald could not get enough of the stick on the puck, and his shot sailed wide right. For the second period, NU outshot Maine 13-4, but did not score the equalizer. Only 39 seconds into the third period, after a Gilhooly save, Graig Mischler broke down the ice, and put a shot on goal from the left side. Morrison made the first save but Willie Levesque came from the other side to clean up the rebound. It was Levesque's fifth goal of the season. The junior forward has now scored in five straight games versus the Black Bears. Gilhooly picked up his first career assist. The game marked the return of senior forward Matt Keating to the Northeastern lineup. Keating, who played professional baseball in the San Francisco Giants organization this past summer, missed the first 12 games of the season due to a wrist injury. He was coming off a 10-goal, 10-assist junior campaign.
