HANOVER, NH - Northeastern freshman Eric Ortlip scored his first two collegiate goals 17 seconds apart in the third period to give Northeastern a come from behind 3-2 victory at Dartmouth Saturday night.
The Huskies trailed 2-1 in the third, but at 4:12, Ortlip took a pass from senior Sean MacDonald and put the puck on a blast over Dartmouth goalie Nick Boucher's left shoulder. NU won the ensuing faceoff, and again MacDonald set up Ortlip, this time at 4:29 for the game-winner. The assists were MacDonald's first two of the season.
Three different players scored their first goals of the season in the game: Ortlip for NU and Michael Byrne and Gary Hunter for Dartmouth.
Mike Gilhooly came up huge in net again for NU, making numerous big saves in the third period and throughout the game. The sophomore made 13 in the third period alone. He finished the game with 35 saves, a season high. Over the last three games, Gilhooly has played 190 minutes, with a 1-0-2 record, 86 saves and only five goals allowed (1.57 GAA, .945 SV%). Boucher had 26 stops for Dartmouth.
The win snaps a six-game winless streak for NU, as the Huskies had been 0-4-2 in their last six. Their last win came Nov. 12 over Boston University, 4-1. NU now has a three-game unbeaten streak, 1-0-2.
Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead at 7:37 of the first period. The Big Green broke in on a three-on-one rush. P.J. Martin put a shot on net from just inside the blue line. Gilhooly made the initial save, but the puck deflected out to Byrne who cashed in on the rebound. It was Byrne's first goal of his senior season and the first goal allowed by Gilhooly in over 87 minutes. The Huskies tied the score less than two minutes later. Graig Mischler fed a streaking Chris Lynch along the left boards. Lynch skated toward the Big Green net and used his backhand to flip the puck over the shoulder of Boucher at 9:27. The goal was Lynch's team-leading eighth of the season.
The Big Green took a 2-1 lead at 17:50 of the second. On a delayed penalty, Hunter took a pass from Jamie Herrington, skated in front of the NU net and put a slap shot into the upper right corner of the net. It was Hunter's first goal of the season.
Tonight's game against Dartmouth was Northeastern's first versus a non-ranked opponent since a 5-2 victory over UMass-Lowell Oct. 27, 11 games ago, and only the fourth all season against an unranked team.
It was the second time in less than a week that a Northeastern freshman came up with two goals in under a minute. Last Sunday against Maine, Trevor Reschny scored two goals in 55 seconds late in the third period to help NU to a 3-3 tie with the Black Bears.
NU improves to 6-6-3 and Dartmouth falls to 2-6-0. Northeastern is off until Dec. 29 when the Huskies will play RPI in the opening round of the RPI Tournament.
