| 2000-01 Schedule/Results Northeastern 3, RPI 2 (OT)
TROY, NY - Freshman forward Scott Selig scored the overtime game-winner to propel NU to a 3-2 victory over 11th ranked Rensselaer in the first round of the 50th Annual Rensselaer Holiday Tournament. Mike Ryan got to a loose puck in the RPI zone, put a shot on net that was saved by Engineer goalie Nathan Marsters. But the puck deflected right to Selig in front who scored the game-winner. It was Selig's fifth goal of the season and his second overtime game-winner. He also had the deciding goal in overtime in a 5-4 win over Wisconsin Oct. 28. The win extends NU's unbeaten streak to four games and ends RPI's six-game unbeaten streak. The Huskies will now play St. Lawrence in the championship game on Saturday night. The Saints defeated Notre Dame 6-3 in the first game of the night. Russ Bartlett, a transfer from Boston University, had a goal and two assists for the Saints and Jeremy Symington made 34 saves. The Huskies defeated St. Lawrence in the season opener for both teams back on Oct. 13. Mike Ryan had a hat trick and an assist to lead the Huskies. RPI plays Notre Dame in the consolation. Mike Gilhooly finished the game with 37 saves for NU and Marsters had 27 for RPI. Northeastern received goals by Selig, Ryan and Graig Mischler. Ryan and Selig ended 10 game scoreless streaks, as both had not scored since the Wisconsin game. Mischler ended a seven game goal-less streak, as his last goal came Nov. 12 against Boston University. The Huskies trailed 1-0 entering the third period, but Graig Mischler evened the score at 1:45 on the 4x4. He scored on a rebound of a Leon Hayward shot for the third goal of his senior season. The Engineers reclaimed the lead less than three minutes later. Matt Murley sent home the rebound of a Carson Butterwick shot at 4:36 for the 2-1 RPI lead. Mike Ryan then tied the game, 2-2, at 13:40 of the third. It was Ryan's eighth goal of the season and his first since Oct. 28 against Wisconsin. Willie Levesque got the puck out of the corner and fed Ryan behind the RPI net. Ryan skated around the net, and used his backhand to beat Marsters who was screened due to the traffic in front of the net. At 1:16 of the second period, the Huskies went on the power-play and kept the puck in the RPI zone for the entire two minutes but could not manage a goal. Just 38 seconds after the end of that power-play, the Huskies again had the man-advantage. But RPI would be the team that scored. Engineer forward Jim Henkel broke in alone on the Husky net. His shot was saved by a diving Mike Gilhooly. But Andrew McPherson was there to clean up the rebound for the shorthanded goal at 4:53. Minutes earlier, after RPI killed an NU power-play, Henkel had breakaway. But his shot went wide of the Northeastern net. At 9:11 of the second, after Eric Ortlip was whistled for slashing, RPI had a 5x3 advantage for 36 seconds but did not manage a shot on net. NU's best scoring chance in the second period came on the power-play at 15:36 when Mike Jozefowicz's blast beat Marsters but deflected off the post. On the same power-play, Jim Fahey fed Willie Levesque in front at point blank range, but Marsters made the stop. Gilhooly has now allowed only four goals in his last three games, over a span of over 200 minutes. His 37 saves were a season-high, one game after his 35-save outing in a 3-2 win over Dartmouth. This is the sixth time NU has participated in the Rensselaer Holiday Tournament. The last time was in the 1979-80 tournament. The Huskies won the championship in 1974-75.
