| 2000-01 Schedule/Results St. Lawrence 4, Northeastern 3
TROY, NY - St. Lawrence's Russ Bartlett scored in the final minute of the game to give the Saints a 4-3 victory over Northeastern in the championship game of the 50th Annual Rensselaer/HSBC Holiday Tournament. With the game clock winding down there was a scramble in front of the Northeastern net. SLU's Erik Anderson and Alan Fyfe both had shots, Fyfe's saved by NU goalie Mike Gilhooly and Anderson's blocked by one of several Husky players diving in front to protect the NU net. But Anderson's shot would deflect to Russ Bartlett in front who stuffed it in the net for the game and tournament winner with only 31 seconds left in the game. The Huskies had a chance to tie the score in the final seconds when Chris Lynch won a faceoff in the SLU zone, got the puck back to Mike Jozefowicz who skated in front and put a good shot on net. But Saint goalie Jeremy Symington made the stop and time expired. Symington (38 saves) was named Tournament MVP. The All-Tournament team consisted of Gilhooly, Jim Fahey and Mike Ryan from Northeastern and Matt Desrosiers, Bartlett and Anderson from Saint Lawrence. NU trailed 3-2 entering the final period. The Huskies were the aggressors for the majority of the final period, outshooting SLU 19-6. The Huskies tied the score at three at 11:34 of the third. Graig Mischler crossed into the SLU end on a two-on-one with Ryan to his left. He passed to Ryan who blasted a slap shot past Symington for the score. Husky freshman Trevor Reschny had a great opportunity to put NU on top 4-3 with three minutes left in the game. Willie Levesque poked the puck to Reschny who broke in alone, but Symington came up with the necessary save. Northeastern defeated Saint Lawrence in the season opener 4-3 on Oct. 13. Ryan had a hat trick and an assist in that game and Symington made 40 stops. The Huskies took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Senior Sean MacDonald took a pass in front from classmate Brian Cummings. MacDonald's first shot hit Symington in the chest but the rebound came out to the senior who scored the goal just 1:51 into the game. NU's second goal came when Mischler won a faceoff to the left of Symington, put a shot on net that was saved. Scott Selig got the puck and had a shot blocked that went to Ryan who scored the goal at 11:41. In two games this season versus the Saints, Ryan had five goals and an assist. The Milton, Mass. Native had three goals and an assist in the tournament. The Saints, who were outshot 13-6 in the first period, outshot the Huskies 20-9 in the second, scoring three goals. Blair Clarance put a shot over Gilhooly that hit the crossbar and went into the net only 52 seconds into the second period. Mike Gellard then scored a pair of goals, one at 16:40 and a shorthanded score at 19:46 to put the Saints on top 3-2 at the end of two. The loss ends NU's four game unbeaten streak (2-0-2) as the Huskies now stand at 7-7-3. SLU improves to 5-7-3. Northeastern returns to action Jan. 4 at home against UMass-Lowell.
