BOSTON, MA - Northeastern (7-8-3, 2-5-3 HE) lost to the UMass-Lowell River Hawks (8-8-2, 2-6-2 HE) 2-1 Thursday night at Matthews Arena.
The River Hawks got all they needed in the first period, as they chipped in a pair of goals within five minutes of each other.
Geoff Schomogyi put the puck past NU netminder Mike Gilhooly at the 8:20 mark to begin the scoring. Brad Rooney and Darryl Green were credited with the assists. Less than five minutes later, Steve Slonina scored off a crisp pass from Jeff Boulanger to provide the winning goal.
NU showed some life in the second when Chris Lynch scored after passes from teammates Willie Levesque and Ryan Dudgeon. The goal by Lynch was his fourth this season against Lowell. It also ended NU's streak of over 156 minutes without scoring a goal at Matthews Arena.
The second period also featured a scuffle in front of the UML bench area. As a result, each team was handed two penalties and the River Hawks lost defenseman Kevin Kotyluk to a game misconduct during the affair.
NU went into the final 20 minutes with a one-goal deficit, and despite a strong effort in the period (10 shots), they failed to put anything past UML goaltender Jimi St. John. The Huskies have now entered the third period down by a goal in four straight games, a stretch in which they have gone 2-2.
Both netminders had solid games, as NU's Gilhooly and UML's St. John stopped 19 and 21 shots, respectively. Gilhooly has been impressive in Hockey East games, sporting a 1.72 goals against average. But he has yet to sport a victory in a league game, with an 0-2-3 record.
Next up for the Huskies is UMass-Amherst at home Friday Jan. 12.
