BOSTON, MA – Northeastern University defeated UMass-Amherst 4-2 in a Hockey East game Friday night at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies (8-8-3, 3-5-3) got a pair of goals in the first period and added one more in both the second and third periods for the win. UMass-Amherst (5-14-2, 4-7-0) was led by Kris Wallis who had a pair of assists.
The same two teams will battle tomorrow night in Amherst. Northeastern has now won four straight games over the Minutemen, a streak that dates back to the 1998-99 season.
For the game there were a total of 30 penalties for over 90 minutes, with all but six of those minutes coming after the first period.
Mike Gilhooly continued his superb play in net, allowing only two goals and making 35 saves. Gilhooly now has a 2.66 goals against average and .906 save percentage. In Hockey East games, his numbers are even more impressive, 1.76 GAA and .936 SV%. Markus Helanen made 35 stops for UMass.
NU got on the board first when a John Peterman slap shot from just outside the blue line deflected off a UMass defender and past Helanen at 2:57. NU added a second first period goal, when Ryan Dudgeon converted a rebound of a Matt Keating shot at 11:55 of the first. The Minutemen closed the gap when Wallis poked the puck to a streaking Martin Miljko, who beat Gilhooly five-hole for the break-away goal at 17:28 of the first.
NU added a third goal at 1:54 of the second. Jim Fahey kept the puck from leaving the UMass zone, and put a shot on net. Helanen made the save, but Willie Levesque was there to cash in, stuffing the puck in the right side of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
The Huskies increased the lead to 4-1 when Chris Lynch scored his 10th of the season on a wrap-around from Levesque and Trevor Reschny at 2:08 of the third. UMass scored its second goal on the power-play at 14:12 on a shot by Thomas Pock. It was the first power-play goal allowed by NU since Dec. 3 against Maine. The Huskies had successfully killed off 27 consecutive power-plays.
