NOTRE DAME, IN - Notre Dame exploded for five second period goals to defeat Northeastern 6-4 Friday night at the Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Ind.
Chad Chipchase scored the final two Notre Dame goals, including the game-winner at 13:47 of the second period. Ryan Dolder added a pair of scores for ND. Chris Lynch had a goal and an assist for the Huskies and Jim Fahey had two assists.
Northeastern led 2-0 at the end of the first period. Scott Selig was set up nicely by his linemates Mike Ryan and Graig Mischler for the first Northeastern score at 4:50 of the first. The second NU goal occurred when Rich Spiller sent the puck along the boards to a streaking Trevor Reschny, who fired a shot past Irish goaltender Jeremiah Kimento with only 23 seconds left in the first period. It was Reschny's first career goal.
But Notre Dame would dominate the final two periods, outshooting the Huskies 30-17, and scoring six goals over that span.
Dolder scored twice in a span of 18 seconds to tie the game at two less than three minutes into the second period. Lynch reclaimed the lead for NU on the power-play at 7:52, but the Irish came right back as Connor Dunlop tied the game at three at 8:35. David Inman made the score 4-3 in favor of Notre Dame at 13:15, and 32 seconds later, Chipchase added the game-winner.
Willie Levesque scored on assists from Fahey and Lynch at 14:56 of the second to bring the Huskies within one, 5-4. But in the third, Notre Dame fired 16 shots at the NU net, and Chipchase's goal at 18:07 of the final period sealed the victory for the hosts.
Mike Gilhooly made 32 stops for Northeastern, including 15 in the third period. Kimento finished the game with 25 saves.
With the victory, Notre Dame improves to 2-2-1, winning its second straight game and Northeastern falls to 1-1-0. The same two teams will battle on Saturday night at the Joyce Center.
