AMHERST, MA - UMass broke a four-game losing streak to Northeastern with a 2-0 win Saturday night at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. UMass took a 1-0 lead at 15:36 of the second on a 4x4 goal via a slap shot by defenseman Samuli Jalkanen. It was only the second goal in 52 career games for Jalkanen, whose other goal came Dec. 11, 1999 against Notre Dame. The goal was also the Minutemen's first 4x4 goal of the year. Marksu Helanen made 16 saves for the shutout. Mike Gilhooly also had 16 saves in defeat. NU defeated UMass the night before in Boston 4-2. In that game, both goalies hah 35 saves. After UMass took the lead, the Huskies came back with a rally, highlighted by a wrap-around by Mike Jozefowicz, but could not score. UMass had a pair of great scoring chances in the first period while shorthanded, both on break-aways by Tim Turner. But both times Gilhooly was able to make the saves. UMass added an empty net goal with one second left in the game, scored by Kris Wallis. NU had back-to-back scoring chances early in the second period. The first was by Mike Ryan whose shot from in front was saved by Helanen. Ryan got control of the rebound and fed Scott Selig skating in front, but Selig's shot was wide of the net. The Huskies play a weekend series with New Hampshire next Friday and Saturday, with Friday's game in Durham and Saturday's in Boston. Northeastern (8-9-3, 3-6-3) vs. UMass Amherst (6-14-2, 5-7-0)
