| 2000-01 Schedule/Results New Hampshire 4, Northeastern 1
DURHAM, NH - In a match up of two of the top goalies in Hockey East, New Hampshire's Ty Conklin got the best of Northeastern's Mike Gilhooly, as the Wildcats defeated NU 4-1 Friday night at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. UNH (16-4-5, 7-2-4) took control of the game in the first period, scoring twice and never trailed. NU (8-10-3, 3-7-3) will host the Wildcats tomorrow night at Matthews Arena. Conklin leads Hockey East in both save percentage (.946) and goals against average (1.47) in league games. Husky netminder Gilhooly is second in both categories(1.67/.937). The four goals allowed by Gilhooly were the most he has allowed all season in a Hockey East game. Conklin finished the game with 24 saves, and Gilhooly had 28. New Hampshire, ranked fifth in the country, dominated the first period, outshooting NU 13-6. The Wildcats broke through at 6:13. Jeff Haydar got control of the puck behind the Huskies net. He fed Johnny Rogers in front for a one-timer that beat Mike Gilhooly. It was Rogers fifth goal of the season. UNH added a second goal when Garrett Stafford passed from his own end to David Busch who broke in alone on Gilhooly and beat him between the pads at 14:57 UNH's win was its first over NU since a 7-2 victory Feb. 19, 1999. The Huskies won last season's series, 1-0-2. The Wildcats are now 11-1-4 in their last 16 games, with a six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2). The Huskies would control the majority of the second period, outshooting UNH 11-6. NU's hard work in the second frame finally paid off when Chris Lynch bulled his way along the left boards, swung around the Wildcat net, and stuffed the puck in the right corner past Conklin. But despite being outplayed for most of the period, UNH got the goal back. On the powerplay, Colin Hemingway won a faceoff that was to the right of Gilhooly. The puck went back to Mark White along the blueline who fired on net for his first goal of the season. UNH added an insurance goal in the third period when Sean Austin beat Gilhooly glove side with a wrist shot at 10:08. NU had a great chance at the start of the third, when UNH's Lanny Gare was called for a five-minute major for slashing just eight second into the period. But with the man-advantage for five-minutes, the Huskies did not score and managed only one shot on net. NU's top line of Mike Ryan, Graig Mischler and Willie Levesque played well, creating several scoring chances, but could not complete any of the opportunites. In the first period, Ryan Set up Mischler who hit the post and minutes later, Mischler returned the favor, leaving the puck for Ryan. The sophomore forward got a good luck and a clean shot, but Conklin made the stop. Entering tonight's game, New Hampshire had not defeated NU since a 7-2 win Feb. 19, 1999. Last season, the teams tied in the first two meetings and the Huskies defeated the Wildcats 6-2 in the final game.
