BOSTON, MA — Northeastern freshman Scott Selig scored the game-winning goal in the third period to lift NU to a 5-3 victory over fifth-ranked New Hampshire Saturday night at Matthews Arena. With the scored tied 3-3 in the third period, Joe Mastronardi skated down the left side and fired a shot on UNH goalie Ty Conklin. Conklin made the save but Selig rushed to the net. He got the rebound and returned a shot on goal and then stuffed it in the net for the game-winner at 12:17. It was Selig’s eighth goal of the season and third game-winner. Willie Levesque sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:38. For the game, Conklin made 13 saves and his counterpart, Mike Gilhooly tied a season-high with 37 saves for the Huskies. It was NU’s fifth come from behind win of the season. NU is now 7-1 this season when scoring at least four goals. The five goals by the Huskies were the most by NU since a five-goal performance versus Wisconsin Oct. 28 in a 5-4 win. The loss by UNH snaps the Wildcats six-game unbeaten streak. UNH defeated NU 4-1 the previous night at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. UNH took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Matt Swain from David Busch at 18:18. The Wildcats extended their lead in the second, when Josh Prudden was set up by his linemates, Corey-Joe Ficek and Colin Hemingway just 2:02 into the season period. The Huskies struck back with a pair of goals. The first was a power-play score by Willie Levesque from Mike Ryan and Graig Mischler at 3:16. Ryan had the puck behind the UNH net, and fed Levesque at the left post for the score. It was NU’s first power-play goal since Dec. 3, ending an 0-32 streak. Then at 7:45 a trio of NU seniors got together for the Husky goal. Kevin Welch sent the puck to the point to Mike Jozefowicz, who found Brian Cummings in front for the score. It was Cumming’s first goal of the season and his first since March 10, 2000 against Boston College. The Wildcats reclaimed the lead at 15:58. Sean Austin hit a streaking Eric Lind who broke in alone on Gilhooly. Lind stuffed the puck between Gilhooly and the left post. The Wildcat lead would be short lived, however, as NU got the equalizer less than three minutes later. On a 4x4 situation, Willie Levesque had the puck at the point, crossed it over to Jim Fahey whose blast from just inside the blueline beat Conklin at 18:27. It was Fahey’s first goal of his junior season, and first since Feb. 14, 2000 versus Harvard. NU next plays on Thursday at home versus Merrimack.
