BOSTON, MA — Northeastern University men’s hockey team defeated Merrimack 3-1 Thursday night in a Hockey East battle at Matthews Arena. NU improves to 10-10-3, 5-7-3 in Hockey East. With UMass-Lowell defeating UMass-Amherst 3-2 also tonight, the Huskies jump into fifth place in Hockey East. The teams played a scoreless third period, but NU dominated play, outshooting the Warriors 14-3. MC pulled goalie Tom Welby (28 saves) for the final 1:39 but failed to capitalize. Graig Mischler (Holbrook, NY) had a goal and an assist, and Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) had two assists. Mike Gilhooly (Calgary, Alb) made 20 saves for the win. It was NU’s first win over Merrimack in exactly three years. NU’s last win came Jan. 25, 1998, 3-2 at Merrimack. It was less than a week ago that the Huskies fell to last place in Hockey East, following a 4-1 defeat at New Hampshire Friday Jan. 19. But with a win over the Wildcats the following night (5-3) combined with tonight’s victory, NU has garnered four crucial points to inch closer to the top. Only four points separate the third place team in Hockey East (Providence) from the last place team (Merrimack). The Huskies took a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period. The first goal was scored by Mischler at 12:45, his fourth of the season. Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, Ma) broke into the Merrimack end with Mischler right behind him. Levesque dropped the puck off for Mischler, whose blast found its way into the upper right corner, beating Welby on the glove side. NU added another score at the end of the first period. Trevor Reschny (Macklin, Sask) put a shot on goal from just inside the right circle. Welby made the save, but Sean MacDonald (Calgary, Alb) was skating around the net, and was at the post to cash in on the rebound at 19:56. It was MacDonald’s third goal of the season. Merrimack cut the Husky lead to 2-1 at 12:22 of the second period. Nick Parillo had a crossing pass to Anthony Aquino, who was stationed to the left of the goal, and he sent the puck in the open side of the net. But NU would strike back at 16:37 of the second. Mischler found Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) in front, and Ryan fired home the slap shot for his 11th goal of the season. Northeastern next plays on Saturday night at UMass-Amherst. The Warriors are off until a Feb. 2 home game versus New Hampshire. Merrimack (12-14-2, 5-10-1) vs. Northeastern (10-10-3, 5-7-3)
