BOSTON, MA — Regan Kelly scored two goals and Devin Rask recorded a goal and an assist to lead Providence to a 4-3 victory over Northeastern Friday night in a Hockey East battle at Matthews Arena.
The Friars improved to 14-7-4, 8-5-2 Hockey East for the season, while the Huskies dropped to 10-11-4, 5-6-4 HEA.
After a scoreless first period, PC would score the game’s first four goals, one in the second and three in the third. Devin Rask scored on a power-play at 14:34 in the second. Kelly had goals at 4:56 and 9:55 of the third, with a score by Peter Zingoni at 9:13. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Huskies trailed 4-0, following Kell’y second goal of the game.
But then NU rallied. After Providence had two players in the penalty box, NU pulled goaltender Mike Gilhooly in the third, putting themselves on a 6-on-3 power play. The strategy paid off, as Jim Fahey put one past PC netminder Boyd Ballard, making the score 4-1 at 12:11 of the third period.
The Huskies answered again four minutes later, at the 13:45 mark, when Joe Mastronadi scored off passes from Fahey and Sean MacDonald. The goal marked the right-winger's fourth point in as many games. The Huskies would come even closer when Arik Engbrecht scored with just over one minute remaining in regulation, but that was all the offense the Huskies could muster.
The Huskies outshot the Friars 24-6 in the third period and 46-23 for the game. But PC goalie Boyd Ballard made 43 stops. Ballard had 39 saves at Matthews Arena back on Nov. 18 in a 4-2 PC victory. Gilhooly finished with 19 saves for the Huskies.
Some of the best action came in the second period, when at 9:09, after a crosscheck by PC's Heath Gordon, the two teams got into it with each other, resulting in all 10 skaters being sent into the penalty box.
Next up for Northeastern is Boston University, who they will play in the first round of the 49th Annual Beanpot Tournament at the FleetCenter Monday night, faceoff at 8 p.m.
