| 2000-01 Schedule/Results Boston U. 6, Northeastern 4
BOSTON, MA - Boston University defeated Northeastern 6-4 in the opening round of the 49th Annual Beanpot Tournament at the FleetCenter on Monday Feb. 5. BU's Brian Collins led the way for the Terriers with three goals, all on the power-play, and an assist. NU outshot BU 38-22, but Jason Tapp made 34 saves for the Terriers. Mike Gilhooly had 16 stops for the Huskies. Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, MA) and Graig Mischler (Holbrook, NY) each had a goal and two assists, Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) had a goal and an assist and Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) had a pair of assists for the Huskies. BU will play Boston College in the championship game Monday Feb. 12 and NU will take on Harvard in the consoaltion. BU controlled the early minutes, holding NU without a shot on net until over eight minutes into the game. Pat Aufiero stole the puck in the NU end and put a perfect centering pass on the stick of Collins who was alone in front and scored a power-play goal at 7:58 of the first period. But NU would get back into the game after the BU score, and tie it at 13:09. Ryan skated in on the left wing, putting a shot on net from just inside the circle. BU goalie Jason Tapp made the first save. Mischler controlled the rebound in front, putting another shot on net. Again Tapp made the save, deflecting the puck to his left. Levesque was there to clean up the rebound for his ninth goal of the season. NU kept the pressure on BU when Sean MacDonald (Calgary, ALB) had a shot from the left faceoff circle, but it was stopped by Tapp. BU reclaimed the lead with under a minute to play in the first period. At 19:10, Jack Baker fed Carl Corazzini in front and he slid the puck between the legs of NU goalie Mike Gilhooly. BU added to its lead at 1:10 of the second. After a Mike Jozefowicz penalty put the Terriers on the power-play, Collins got the puck at the left post, put a move on Gilhooly and wrapped the puck around the NU netminder. The Huskies had a 5-on-3 advantage for 56 seconds beginning at 6:02 of the second but failed to capitalize. BU then went on a power-play of its own, and scored its third man-advantage goal of the night. Dan Cavanaugh skated around an NU defender, crossed the pass to Collins, who scored past a diving Gilhooly at 8:24. It was Collins' third goal of the game for his first career hat trick, all three goals coming on the power-play. The Huskies crept to within two goals on the power-play at 10:07. Levesque passed out to Fahey at the point and his shot beat a screened Tapp between the legs. It was Fahey's third goal of the season and his second in as many games. NU came even closer at 16:05 on the power-play. Levesque got to a rebound of a Mike Jozefowicz (Toms River, NJ) shot. Levesque was at the left post and batted the puck to the right post where Mischler was stationed to deflect the puck for his fifth goal of the season. But BU extended the lead to 5-3 at 18:38 of the second when Nick Gillis put home the rebound of a Collins shot. The Huskies had a great chance to get the goal back when Scott Selig (Duxbury, MA) broke in alone on Tapp, but Tapp was able to make the glove save. The Huskies narrowed the gap to one, 5-4, at 10:47 of the third period when they scored their thrid power-play goal of the game with a 5-on-3 advantage. A Jozefowicz slapshot from just inside the blueline beat Tapp. Fahey and Mischler assisted on the goal. It was Jozefowicz's first goal of his senior season. But, despite, some great chances, NU never got the tying goal. Corazzini ended NU's hopes with an empty-netter in the final seconds. The six goals allowed by NU tied a season-high and the five allowed by Gilhooly were his moost since the seocnd game of the season, at Notre Dame.
