BOSTON, MA - In a wild game, Northeastern defeated Harvard in the consolation game of the 49th Annual Beanpot 8-7. Northeastern took its first lead of the night at 17:03 of the third period on a goal by Graig Mischler (Holbrook, NY) from Mike Jozefowicz (Toms River, NJ) and Jim Fahey (Milton, MA). For Mischler it was his fourth point of the night (1 G, 3 A). The goal proved to be the game-winner, in an 8-7 victory for the Huskies over Harvard. In the game, the Huskies trailed 2-0, 5-2, 6-3 and 7-5, but rallied for the victory. The eight goals for NU were the most since an 8-2 win over UMass-Amherst Jan. 6, 1999. Five different players scored their first goals of the season in the game. For NU, Brian Sullivan (Marshfield, MA) had not only his first of the season but his first career, and Leon Hayward (Seattle, WA) had his first of the season. For the Crimson, Abe Kinkopf, Blair Barlow and Jared Cantanucci netted their first for the season. In addition to Mischler's four points, the NU offense was led by Brian Cummings' (West Roxbury, MA) two goals and an assist, Fahey's goal and two assists and Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, MA) and Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) who each had a goal and an assist. The teams combined for the second most goals in Beanpot history. The record for goals in a Beanpot game is 17, done twice. Harvard beat BC 11-6 in the first round of the 1974 tournament and BU defeated BC 12-5 in the opening round of the 1978 tournament. Harvard seemed to seal the win with a short-handed goal by Steve Moore at 4:36 of the third period to take a 7-5 lead. Moore had a great game offensively for the Crimson with a goal and four assists. But that would be the last Crimson goal of the night. NU netted its sixth of the night when Ryan took a crossing pass from Mischler at 5:53 for his 12th of the season. Then at 5:53, Hayward knocked in a rebound of a John Peterman (Madison, WI) shot for the game-tying score. NU appeared to take the lead at 6:10 when a Jim Fahey blast beat Harvard goalie Oliver Jonas. But the goal was not allowed, as the referee ruled a NU played was in the crease. The Huskies, however, would officially take the lead on Mischler's goal at 17:03. For the game, NU outshot Harvard 36-34. Jonas had 28 saves for Harvard. Jason Braun, making his first start since Dec. 1 at Maine, played the first period in net for the Huskies, making nine stops. Mike Gilhooly came on in relief, playing the final two periods to earn the win, making 18 saves. Harvard came out aggressive, taking a 2-0 lead before the midway point of the first period. Kinkopf scored at 2:05 for the 1-0 lead and Tim Petit gave the Crimson a 2-0 advantage at 9:36. The Huskies would start a trend, by getting back into the game after falling behind. Sullivan scored his first career goal on a blast at 12:10. Cummings then tied the game at 12:57. It was Cummings' fifth goal in five career games versus the Crimson. But Harvard would reclaim control of the game. Barlow netted a power-play score at 15:23 and Cantanucci gave Harvard a 4-2 lead with a goal at 17:06 of the first. The Crimson added to their lead, when Chris Bala scored on the power-play just 37 seconds into the second period, for a 5-2 Harvard edge. But then came the Huskies storming back. Levesque scored for NU, his third goal in three games, on the power-play at 13:49 of the second. A Peter Capouch goal at 14:23 briefly delayed the NU momentum, but it quickly swung back to NU. Fahey scored on a one-timer off a pass from Mischler at 17:12 of the second and then 30 seconds later, Cummings brought the Huskies within one, 6-5, with his second goal of the night. It was Cummings' first two-goal game of the season. The Huskies next play Friday night at Merrimack. HU (10-12-1, 9-6-1) vs. Northeastern (11-13-4, 5-9-4)
