NORTH ANDOVER, MA - Merrimack overcame a 2-0 deficit and scored four unanswered goals over the final two periods to defeat Northeastern 4-2 Friday night at the Volpe Complex in North Andover, Mass.
Anthony Aquino and Nick Parillo each had a goal and an assist and Joe Exter had 43 saves for Merrimack in the win. NU and MC will play again on Saturday night, at Matthews Arena, game time 7 p.m.
In a reversal of recent trends, Northeastern jumped out to the quick lead. Senior Graig Mischler scored a power-play goal off a rebound of a Mike Jozefowicz shot at 9:28. It was the fourth straight game Mischler has scored a goal and the fifth straight he has had at least one point. NU added its second goal at 13:27. Eric Ortlip took a pass frmo Leon Hayward and skated down the right side. He put a shot on net that fooled Exter and found its way into the back of the net for his third goal of the season. The Huskies dominated the first period, leading 2-0 at the end of one and outshooting Merrimack 18-4 over the first 20 minutes.
But after that, the game belonged to Merrimack. A power-play goal at 9:53 of the second by Nick Cammarata put the Warriors on the board. Then just one second after Kevin Welch got out of the penalty box, a Steve Moon slap shot from the point beat Mike Gilhooly (26 saves) to tie the score 2-2 at the 15:16 mark.
Merrimack got the game-winning goal when a Nick Parillo shot from the left side was stopped by Gilhooly, deflected into the air and landed behind the NU netminder for the go-ahead goal at 11:36 of the third. Aquino supplied the insurance at 17:15. Marco Rosa skated in on Gilhooly, putting a shot on net from the right side. Gilhooly made the stop, but Aquino skated in front alone on the left and batted the rebound into the net.
