| NOTRE DAME, IN – For the second straight night, Northeastern led 2-0 at the end of one period, only to see the Fighting Irish come back in the second period. But unlike the night before, Northeastern was able to hold off the Notre Dame come back and went on to a 5-3 win.
With Northeastern on the power-play, Mike Ryan scored the game-winner, his second goal of the night and fifth of the season at 1:34 of the third period. Notre Dame had a great chance when Brian Cummings was whistled for cross-checking at 12:31. On the man-advantage, ND’s Rob Globke’s blast hit the post and the Huskies were able to kill the penalty. At 18:54, Notre Dame’s Brett Lebda was whistled for holding the stick due to a hustling Leon Hayward. The penalty gave the Huskies a 5x4 advantage and Chris Lynch scored the power-play goal to seal the win at 19:05 of the third.
Jason Braun made 34 saves for Northeastern and Jeremiah Kimento had 27 stops for Notre Dame. Ryan had two goals for NU and Graig Mischler and Arik Engbrecht each had three assists.
The Huskies came out the aggressor, firing four shots and scoring twice in the first 2:25 of play. Trevor Reschny took a pass from Brian Cummings and scored the second goal of his freshman season only 38 seconds into the game. Scott Selig then scored in his third straight game, when he deflected an Engbrecht shot past ND goalie Kimento at 2:25. Over the final 17:35 of the first, Notre Dame outshot NU 17-4, but Braun, making his first start of the season, turned aside all 17 attempts.
The Irish had a 5x3 advantage for 1:23 but the Husky defense and Braun did not allow ND to score. The Irish had four first period power-plays, but were limited to only three shots with the man-advantage.
In the second period, Connor Dunlop put the Irish on the board at 3:10 on a pass from Dan Carlson. NU’s Ryan put back a Mischler shot at 10:05 to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead. But Notre Dame’s Rob Globke scored a 4x4 goal at 13:20 on a tremendous individual effort. While falling down, Globke fired a shot that beat Braun. Then on a delayed penalty, David Inman stuffed the puck in the net at 18:20 to tie the score at three, which is how it stood at the end of the second period.
The night before Notre Dame overcame a 2-0 first period deficit to defeat Northeastern 6-4, scoring five second-period goals. In the two-game set, Notre Dame outscored Northeastern 8-3 in the second period.
With the win, Northeastern improves to 2-1-0 on the season while Notre Dame falls to 2-3-1.
