BOSTON, MA — In Jack Parker’s 1000th game as the head coach at Boston University, the Terriers defeated Northeastern 2-1 in front of 4062 fans at Matthews Arena Friday night.
Mike Pandolfo scored what proved to be the game-winner at 16:10 of the third period when he took a pass in front from Dan Cavanuagh, who was behind the NU net and beat Jason Braun (Fruitport, MI) for his 11th goal of the season. At the time, the goal put BU on top 2-0.
The Huskies made the closing moments interesting. With Braun out of the net, Graig Mischler (Holbrook, NY) put a blast on net that was deflected past Jason Tapp (37 saves) by Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) to bring NU within one, 2-1, at 19:02. It was Ryan’s team-leading 14th goal of the season and extended Mischler’s point streak to seven games. Braun remained out of the net but the Huskies could net get the tying score.
Braun finished the game with a season-high 36 saves.
BU got on the board in the second period off a nice individual effort by Pat Aufiero. Aufiero took the puck up ice and swung behind the NU net. His initial shot was stopped by Braun, but the rebound came back to Aufiero. Seeing Braun still on the ice, Aufiero swung in front, and deposited the puck top shelf for his fourth goal of the season at 16:10.
The game continued the trend of close battles between the Huskies and Terriers. Of the last 14 games between NU and BU, there has been one tie, six one-goal games, four two-goal games and three three-goal games. The same two team’s will battle tomorrow night at Walter Brown Arena.
