BOSTON, MA - The Northeastern Huskies overcame a 3-2 third period deficit to defeat Boston University 4-3 at Walter Brown Arena Saturday night.
Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) led the Huskies with his second hat trick of the season, including both the game-tying and game-winning goals in the third period. It was Ryan's team-leading fourth game-winning goal of the season. Graig Mischler (Holbrook, NY) had three assists also for the Huskies to extend his point-streak to eight games. Jason Braun (Fruitport, MI) was strong again in net for NU, finishing with 31 saves. It was the third time this season Braun had at least 30 stops against the Terriers.
Trailing 3-2 in the third, Ryan was twice set up by Mischler in front of the BU net for goals. The tying score came at 3:32 and the winning goal was at 5:58 on the power-play. Willie Levesque (Vineyard Haven, MA) also assisted on the play. After taking the lead, the Huskies relied on Braun and great defensive play for the games final 14 minutes, limiting BU to only eight shots on net over the final 20 minutes.
The victory gives the Huskies the Hockey East regular season series from BU for the second time in three seasons. NU defeated BU 4-1 back on Nov. 12 and lost 2-1 last night to the Terriers with both games being played at Matthews Arena. NU is now 3-1-1 in its last five games at Walter Brown Arena.
NU opened the game similar to how it closed it, with a power-play goal by Ryan from Mischler and Levesque. But BU came back with a power-play goal of its own, from Freddy Meyer off a shot from the left faceoff circle. In the second period, a Pat Aufiero goal, his second in as many nights, put BU on top 2-1. NU answered with a blast by senior John Peterman (Madison, WI) from the point at 9:08. Peterman was set up by Joe Mastronardi (Vestal, NY). BU took the lead 3-2 at 12:35 when Brian Collins finished off a scramble in front of the NU net with his 14th goal of the season. BU went into the second intermission with the lead.
BU was undefeated when leading after two periods (12-0-0), until the Huskies ended the streak. For the Huskies, it was the seventh time this season they had come back to win a game when trailing as late as the second period.
Jason Tapp had 23 saves for BU. On the other end, it was another impressive performance by Braun against the Terriers. In three starts versus BU this season, Braun has a 2-1-0 record, 2.02 goals against average and .944 save percentage.
Offensively, it was Ryan's fifth multi-goal game of the season. He leads the Huskies with 17 goals. Mischler recorded his fourth three-assist game of the year and his third in the last two weeks. Levesque had a pair of assists and Peterman had a goal and an assist.
The Huskies will next play on Thursday at Boston College.
