| 2000-01 Schedule/Results UMass-Lowell 6, Northeastern 2
BOSTON, MA — UMass-Lowell defeated Northeastern 6-2 in the final regular season game for both teams at Matthews Arena Saturday night. For the River Hawks (17-14-3, 10-11-3) the win puts them in fifth place in Hockey East and will send Lowell to play at New Hampshire next weekend in the Hockey East quarterfinals. Northeastern (13-17-4, 7-13-4) will play either Maine or Boston College, depending on thew outcome of the New Hampshire UMass-Amherst game going on in Amherst Saturday night. A UMass-Amherst win will send NU to play top-seed Boston College. A loss or a tie by the Minutemen will send NU to play the Black Bears. The game was marred by a Hockey East record of 179 combined penalty minutes. The previous mark was 148 set in a game between Providence and UMass-Lowell Feb. 26, 1986. NU had 23 penalties for 89 minutes and UMass-Lowell had 29 penalties for 90 minutes. Lowell’s 90 minutes were also a new Hockey East record. Ed McGrane netted a short handed goal just 20 seconds into the third night that gave UNL a 5-1 lead and ended Gilhooly’s might. Hainsey then netted his second of the night at 12:44 of the third. Welch completed the scoring for the night, with a power-play goal at 15:43. UMass-Lowell wins the season series from NU 2-1-0.
