BOSTON, MA — UMass-Lowell defeated Northeastern 6-2 in the final regular season game for both teams at Matthews Arena Saturday night.

For the River Hawks (17-14-3, 10-11-3) the win puts them in fifth place in Hockey East and will send Lowell to play at New Hampshire next weekend in the Hockey East quarterfinals. Northeastern (13-17-4, 7-13-4) will play either Maine or Boston College, depending on thew outcome of the New Hampshire UMass-Amherst game going on in Amherst Saturday night. A UMass-Amherst win will send NU to play top-seed Boston College. A loss or a tie by the Minutemen will send NU to play the Black Bears.

The game was marred by a Hockey East record of 179 combined penalty minutes. The previous mark was 148 set in a game between Providence and UMass-Lowell Feb. 26, 1986. NU had 23 penalties for 89 minutes and UMass-Lowell had 29 penalties for 90 minutes. Lowell’s 90 minutes were also a new Hockey East record. For the game, Lowell was 2-6 on the power-play and NU was 2-12.

Ron Hainsey and Peter Hay each had two goals for UML. Jimi St. John was strong in net for the River Hawks making 37 saves for the game. For the Huskies, Graig Mischler extended his point streak to 10 games with his 10th goal of the season. He finished the regular season with a team best 41 points on 10 goals and 31 assists. Kevin Welch had the other Husky goal. Mike Gilhooly made the start in net for NU, finishing with 16 saves. Matt Coates replaced Gilhooly at 0:20 of the third, and made five saves allowing one goal.

Lowell took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, getting goals from Hainsey at 8:18 and Hay at 12:24. Hay added his second of the night at 7:02 of the second to give the River Hawks a 3-0 lead. NU cut into the deficit on Mischler’s power-play score at 15:16 of the second. But UML came right back as Stephen Slonina scored his second of the season at 18:58.

Ed McGrane netted a short handed goal just 20 seconds into the third night that gave UNL a 5-1 lead and ended Gilhooly’s might. Hainsey then netted his second of the night at 12:44 of the third. Welch completed the scoring for the night, with a power-play goal at 15:43.

UMass-Lowell wins the season series from NU 2-1-0. The Huskies defeated UML 5-2 on Oct. 27, then lost to the River Hawks Jan. 4 2-1 and then 6-2 tonight.
