ORONO, ME - Northeastern lost to Maine 2-1 Thursday night in the first game of the best of three series in the Hockey East quarterfinals at Alfond Arena.
Maine's Martin Kariya scored the game-winning goal from in front at 13:26 of the third period. It was Kariya's 11th goal of the season.
The same two teams will play again Friday night at Alfond in the second game of the series.
The Black Bears, the second-seed in the tournament, are now 8-1-1 in their last 10 games, improving to 18-10-7. NU falls to 13-18-4.
Both goalies played well in net. Mike Gilhooly from NU made 23 saves, including several that stopped quality scoring chances for the Black Bears. Maine's Matt Yeats was just as impressive, finishing with 28 saves.
The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead at 19:45 of the first period on a power-play goal by Matthias Trattnig. Don Richardson kept the puck in the NU zone for Maine, and got it to Chris Heisten. The puck then found Trattnig on the side of the net who went high to beat a diving Gilhooly for his 10th goal of the season.
In the second period, NU controlled much of the action, limiting the Black Bears to only two shots while placing nine on net themselves. However, the Huskies could not score in the second period.
Northeastern finally broke through at 4:30 of the third period. Freshman Eric Ortlip skated into the Maine end on a 2-on-1 and got the puck to linemate Joe Mastronardi whose blast from outside the right circle beat Yeats. It was Mastronardi's sixth goal of his sophomore season.
