ORONO, MAINE - Maine's Niko Dimitrakos three-goal, four-point performance led the Black Bears to the 6-3 win over Northeastern, completing the two-game sweep of the Huskies in the Hockey East quarterfinal series.
It was the final game in the Northeastern careers for seven Husky seniors.
The Huskies finish the 2000-01 campaign at 13-19-4 while Maine improves to 19-10-7 and advances to the Hockey East semifinals.
Northeastern outshot Maine 27-22. The Black Bears have only been outshot seven times this season, but four of those have been by the Huskies, including both games in the series.
Dimitrakos staked the Black Bears to an early lead with a goal two minutes into the opening period. On the play, the UMaine junior split two Husky defenders with a spin move in the left circle and beat Mike Gilhooly (Calgary, Alberta) with a shortside wrist shot.
Dimitrakos added a power play goal with seven seconds remaining in the opening stanza and UMaine went to the first break up 2-0.
Black Bear senior Matthias Trattnig gave UMaine a three goal lead when he beat Gilhooly (16 saves) above the glove with a break-in backhander midway through the second period.
Northeastern's John Peterman (Madison, WI) put the Huskies on the board five minutes later with a power play bullet past UMaine goalie Matt Yeats (Innisfail, Alberta).
Black Bear forward Chris Heisten (Anchorage, Alaska) and Husky center Eric Ortlip (St. Louis, MO) exchanged goals one minute apart late in the period and the teams skated to the final break with the score at 4-2.
Dimitrakos completed the hat trick and put the game on ice with a power play tally off a give and go play with Heisten at the 14:34 mark of the third. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Huskies who had dominated the play to that point in the period.
"It sort of a synopsis of our season," said Northeastern coach Bruce Crowder. "We work hard, get a lot of opportunites and outshoot teams, but we just haven't been able to outscore them."
Northeastern coach Bruce Crowder pulled Gilhooly with two minutes remaining in the game and senior Mike Jozefowicz (Toms River, N.J.) beat Yeats (24 saves) at the 19:01 mark to cut the lead to 5-3. But Black Bear sophomore Martin Kariya scored into an empty net 42 seconds later to put the finishing touches on the series sweep.
