LOWELL, MA – Chris Lynch’s first career hat trick lifted Northeastern to a 5-2 victory over UMass-Lowell Friday night at Tsongas Arena. It was the Hockey East opener for both teams. The Huskies exploded for three goals in the game’s first 11 minutes, and then added a pair in the third. Lynch scored NU’s final three goals. He had a shorthanded, power play and empty net goal. The Huskies improve to 3-1-0, 1-0-0 in Hockey East, while Lowell drops to 2-1-0, 0-1-0 in Hockey East. With NU leading 3-2 in the third period, Josh Reed was whistled for cross-checking, giving the Huskies a power-play. On the ensuing face off, Lycnh took a pass from freshman Eric Ortlip, stepped around the UML defender, and fired a blast for a 4-2 advantage. Lynch clinched the win with an empty-net goal at 19:21. Jason Braun made 19 saves for the win and Cam McCormick made 24 stops for the River Hawks. It was Northeastern’s first ever victory at Tsongas Arena and first NU win in Lowell since Jan. 6, 1996. Current NU coach Bruce Crowder was the head coach at Lowell for the game in ‘96. The win snapped NU’s six-game losing streak in Lowell. Northeastern continued a trend of fast starts with three first-period goals against Lowell. The Huskies have now scored seven first-period goals while not allowing any over the last three games. For the third straight game, an NU freshman began the Husky scoring. Friday it was Ryan Dudgeon with his first career score. Dudgeon’s shot trickled through the legs of UML goalie McCormick at 3:29. At 6:49, Willie Levesque took a pass from Lynch in front for a power-play goal. Then, with the River Hawks on the power-play, Levesque broke up the play at the blueline and fed a streaking Lynch who sent home the breakaway shorthanded goal at 10:26. However, for the third straight game, Northeastern saw its opponent come back in the second period. Over the past three games, NU has been outscored 10-3 in second periods. Laurent Meunier scored on the power-play at 10:25 to bring UML within two, 3-1. Then at 12:42 UML cut the deficit to 3-2 as Kyle Kidney on a pass from Meunier scored a shorthanded goal. Northeastern returns to action Saturday night against Wisconsin at Matthews Arena. The Badgers enter the game as the top-ranked team in the country. Last season, the Huskies were 4-0-3 against teams ranked either first or second in the nation. Northeastern (2-1, 1-0 HE) vs. UMass Lowell (2-1, 0-1 HE)
