Ninth-ranked Maine and 13th-ranked Northeastern skated to a 1-1 tie in a Hockey East game at Matthews Arena on Saturday night. The Black Bears are now 2-3-2 (0-1-1 Hockey East), while the Huskies are 4-2-1 (1-1-1).
Both teams were both coming off Friday night losses and settled for a point in the standings after a tight game. The Black Bears fell 5-3 at Providence on Friday and the Huskies dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 3 Boston College.
Chris Lynch nearly ended the game and gave the Huskies the win just seconds into overtime, but his blast was stopped by Maine goalie Mike Morrison. He finished with 32 saves. His netminding counterpart, NU sophomore Mike Gilhooly, had 27 saves, including several big stops in overtime.
Both teams also had numerous opportunities in the third period, but Morrison stopped all 11 shots he faced and Gilhooly turned away nine Black Bear attempts.
In the first period, Maine was first to get on the board, receiving a quick, power-play goal from Matthias Trattnig just 2:29 into the game. It came on assists from Doug Janik and Chris Heisten. The game remained with the Black Bears ahead until NU got on a power-play of its own and tied the game as Willie Levesque scored in the final minute of first period action after collecting a rebound of a Ryan Dudgeon shot.
The game was back and forth in the second period, with both teams having solid chances to break the knot. The second period passed without a goal being scored by either team, due to strong goaltending on both ends. Maine's Morrison stopped six NU attempts as did Gilhooly, who turned away six Bears' shots. NU also had a solid penalty-killing effort, as it was shorthanded twice and did not allow a goal.
Last season, the top-ranked and unbeaten Black Bears invaded Matthews Arena and lost both games of a weekend set. NU has now not lost to Maine in four straight meetings.
