The 12th-ranked Northeastern Huskies defeated No. 11 Boston University 4-1 in a Hockey East game at Matthews Arena on Sunday night.
The win was NU’s first at home against the Terriers since January of 1998, snapping a three-game losing streak against BU at Matthews. Graig Mischler netted a pair of goals to lead the Huskies. NU improved to 5-2-1, 2-1-1 in Hockey East play, while the Terriers fell to 2-4-1 and 1-3-1 in the conference.
The third period featured back-and-forth play, until Mischler put NU up, 3-1, at the 13:36 mark. NU netminder Jason Braun had a strong showing, stopping 34 shots, including 15 in the final 20 minutes. For BU, Jason Tapp turned away 22 NU attempts. NU’s Chris Lynch scored his team’s fourth and final goal of the night, with 4:22 left in the game, from Willie Levesque and Joe Mancuso.
Northeastern scored its first goal at 2:15 in the second, tying the game on a shot by Mischler and assists from Mike Ryan and Mancuso. Braun’s strong goaltending kept NU in the game, particularly when his team was shorthanded. The Huskies took the lead for good with nine minutes left in the second period as Sean McDonald put the puck past Tapp from Levesque and Mancuso. The goal was McDonald’s first in his last 52 games.
BU was quick to get on the board in the first period, as Mike Pandolfo scored a power-play goal in the first four minutes of action. Dan Cavanaugh and Freddy Meyer dished out the assists. BU found itself on another power-play in the final minutes of the first, but NU’s strong penalty-killing and Braun’s goaltending prevented the Terriers from striking again.
Before Sunday’s matchup, Mancuso had only tallied two career assists, but his three against BU changed his total to five. Next up for the Huskies is Providence College, as the Friars will host NU Friday night and then travel to Boston to take on the Huskies again Saturday at 7 p.m.
