PROVIDENCE, RI - Providence College defeated Northeastern 3-1 Friday night at Schneider Arena in Providence. Peter Fregoe scored two goals, including the insurance score in the third period to lead the Friars. NU goalie Mike Gilhooly made 29 saves and Nolan Schaefer had 28 for PC. Jon DiSalvatore broke up the play along the boards and passed off to Fregoe who sent home the Friars' third goal of the night at 15:02 of the third. The Huskies had numerous scoring chances throughout the game but only beat Schaefer (5-1-0) once all night. With the win, PC improves to 6-2-1, 3-1-1 in Hockey East while NU falls to 5-3-1, 2-2-1 HEA. The same two teams will play again tomorrow night in Boston. The second and third periods were filled with penalties, 24 in all, including 17 in the third. But both teams went 0-8 on the power-play. Providence scored on their first two shots in the penalty marred second period to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermissionThe goals came from Fregoe and J.J. Picinic at 4:15 and 5:20 respectively. Sophomore Joe Mastronardi scored his second goal of the season at 11:25 to bring NU within one, 2-1. Trevor Reschny fed a streaking Mastronardi who fired a blast past Nolan Schaefer from the right wing. Chris Lynch had a great chance to tie the game midway through the period when he broke in alone on Schaefer. But Schaefer remained calm and in the net, and Lynch's shot sailed high. But the story of the second period was the penalties, 17 in all. The final whistle of the period was a game misconduct on PC's Devin Rask for butt-ending at 19:35. Mastronardi's goal came with six players in the penalty box, three for both teams. With all the penalties, PC is 0-4 on the power-play and NU is 0-6. Penalties continued to be called at a record breaking pace in the third, with two penalties called on Brian Cummings during faceoffs (one for delay of game and the other for slashing). The defenses and the goalies kept the offenses at bay in the first period between Northeastern and Providence, as the score was tied 0-0 at the end of one. PC was outshooting NU 6-0 early in the first period, but NU battled back to take an 8-6 advantage. Gilhooly made six saves for NU and Schaefer eight for the Friars.
