ANCHORAGE, AK - The Northeastern men's hockey team lost its season opener 5-3 to Alaska-Anchorage in the first night of the Nye Frontier Classic hosted by UAA. UAA senior forward Mike Scott had a pair of goals and Gregg Zaportan and Vladimir Novak each had a goal and an assist for the Seawolves. Senior captain Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) played a part in all three NU goals with a goal and two assists. Freshman Jason Guerriero (Manorville, NY) had a pair of assists in his Husky debut. The Seawolves scored first period power-play goals on their first two chances and led 2-0 at the end of one. Scott began the scoring with a power-play score at 2:24 of the first and then Eric Lawson added UAA's second goal of the game at 6:58. Alaska-Anchorage outshoot Northeastern 15-2 in the first period. UAA added to its lead with a goal at 4:47 of the second when Novak scored on a delayed penalty. Trailing 3-0, the Huskies finally got on the board with a power-play goal of their own. Freshman Tim Judy (Bowie, MD) slid the puck to Fahey whose one-timer beat UAA goalie Chris King at6:59. But the Seawolves would have the answer when Zapportan scored at 14:07 on a breakaway. The Huskies made it interesting by scoring the game's next two goals to trim the gap to 4-3. Junior Joe Mastronardi (Vestal, NY) tipped in a Fahey shot at 15:54 of the second. In the third, senior Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) knocked in the rebound of a Fahey shot at 7:56 for the power-play score. But Scott would answer for the Seawolves, sealing the win with a goal at 16:38 of the third. Junior Mike Gilhooly (Calgary, ALB) made 27 saves for the Huskies and King had 25 stops for UAA. The win marked the first in the career of UAA head coach John Hill. The 1984 graduate of Alaska-Anchorage made his coaching debut Friday night versus the Huskies. The loss snaps NU's winning streak in season-openers at four. The last time NU lost in a season opener was a 4-3 defeat at RPI to begin the 1996-97 season. It was the first ever meeting between Northeastern and Alaska-Anchorage. The Huskies participated in the first ever UAA Classic n 1983-84, but did not play the host school. The Huskies play Denver on Saturday in the final day of the Nye Frontier Classic. At 4 p.m. Alaska Time (8 pm. EST). Denver defeated Boston College in the first game of the night 4-3.
