BOSTON, MA — Providence College scored four third-period goals to overcome a 2-1 third-period deficit and defeat Northeastern 5-3 on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. Junior right-winger Jon DiSalvatore (Windsor, CT) scored four of PC’s five goals, including the last two for his first career hat trick. Jim Fahey (Milton, MA) had a goal and an assist for NU. With the win, the Friars earn a split of the weekend home-and-home series with Northeastern. The Huskies won 3-1 on Friday night at Schneider Arena in Providence. NU got on the board first at 15:29 of the first period. Sophomore Trevor Reschny (Macklin, SASK) put a shot on net that was stopped by PC goalie Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, SASK). The puck came out to Chris Lynch (Duxbury, MA) who was at the left post. Lynch saw Schaefer out of position and tried to get the puck to Joe Mastronardi (Vestal, NY) in front, but his pass deflected off a Providence defender and into the net for his second goal in as many nights. The Huskies added to their lead at 3:26 of the second period. Fahey came out of the penalty box as Mastronardi broke up the play. Mastronardi spotted Fahey and fed him in stride as Fahey crossed the PC blue line. The senior captain broke in alone and scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season. PC cut the deficit to 2-1 later in the second on a power-play goal by DiSalvatore. Stephen Wood (Sudbury, MA) had the puck at the point and crossed it to DiSalvatore whose shot from straight on beat NU goalie Jason Braun (Fruitport, MI). DiSalvatore then tied the game in the third period. With the Huskies on the power-play, Arik Engbrecht’s (Winnipeg, MAN) pass deflected off DiSalvatore. The PC forward then raced to the puck and skated in alone on Braun and scored his second of the night, knotting the score 2-2. At 10:20 of the third, Wood put the Friars on top with a shot from just inside the blueline. The lead was short lived, as less than four minutes later, NU tied the game 3-3. On the power-play, Fahey passed to Mike Ryan (Milton, MA) at the right circle, and Ryan blasted a slap shot past Schaefer. The goal extended Ryan’s point streak to seven games, each game he has played this season. The tie did not last long. On the ensuing face-off, Doug Wright (Kamsack, SASK) won the draw to DiSalvatore, who raced in on Braun and scored his third goal of the night at 14:00. He later sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:47. The loss ends NU’s 32-game unbeaten streak when leading at the end of two periods. NU had been 26-0-6 in its last 32 when entering the final 20 minutes with a lead. The last time the Huskies squandered a third-period lead was Feb. 13, 1998 against Army. NU was ahead 5-4 after two, but lost that game 6-5. Braun finished the game with 16 saves while Nolan Schaefer had 30 stops for the Friars. NU returns to action next Friday at the University of Maine. Providence College (4-5-0, 3-3-0 HEA) vs. Northeastern (3-5-2, 2-3-1 HEA)
